Two standout freshmen from Hampton University volleyball, Taylor Shumate and Morgan Warren, represented Team HBCU in an international tournament held in Gaborone, Botswana. The event, known as the Ditsala International Cup, ran from May 29 to June 2 and featured teams from across the globe.

Representing Team HBCU with Pride

Shumate, from Austin, Texas, and Warren, from Durham, North Carolina, were selected to join a handpicked group of HBCU student-athletes. Competing against collegiate teams from the United States and national teams from Southern Africa, Team HBCU went undefeated. The squad claimed the tournament championship by defeating a strong team sponsored by Bring It Promotions (BIP).

Shumate described the experience as amazing. She said that going undefeated in an international tournament was a great feeling and encouraged other HBCU volleyball players to take advantage of opportunities like this.

A Journey Beyond Competition

The tournament was just one part of a larger, transformative journey. After competing, the players traveled to Francistown and Kasane, where they hosted youth volleyball clinics and led coaching workshops. The experience allowed them to give back to the community while growing as global ambassadors.

In addition to volleyball outreach, the student-athletes enjoyed several cultural experiences. These included wildlife safaris at Mokolodi Game Reserve and Khama Rhino Sanctuary, as well as a boat safari on the Chobe River. The trip also took them to Zambia and Zimbabwe, where they visited Victoria Falls, one of the world’s most iconic natural wonders.

Sports Diplomacy in Action

Another highlight of the trip was a visit to the U.S. Embassy in Botswana, where the players met with diplomats and learned about sports diplomacy and international relations.

Warren expressed her gratitude for the experience. She said she was truly grateful for the opportunity to represent Hampton University in such a historic moment. The journey reaffirmed her commitment to excellence both on and off the court and deepened her pride in being part of Hampton’s legacy.

A Win for Hampton University Volleyball

This international tour not only highlighted the athletic talents of Shumate and Warren but also showcased the mission and excellence of Hampton University volleyball on a global stage. Their participation marked a significant milestone for the program and inspired a new level of pride across the Pirate Nation.

Cambodia’s Pen Narita honours late coach with emotional fencing win at FISU Games

Written by Soyoung Bang, FISU Young Reporter, Korea

On Saturday, 19 July, at the women’s sabre individual event of the Rhine-Ruhr 2025 FISU World University Games, Cambodia’s Pen Narita stepped onto the fencing piste alone.

But she didn’t feel entirely alone.

In her mind, she still heard the voice of her late coachβ€”soft, steady, and still vivid in her mind: β€œAllez, Narita!”

That voice belonged to Bruno Gaby, a French fencing master who spent the last chapter of his life in Cambodia. Though he passed away in 2023, his teachings live onβ€”in Narita’s movement, her discipline, and her resilience.

β€œDuring my last point today, I froze,” said Narita, a finance student from the Institute of Banking Studies in Phnom Penh. β€œThen I heard him in my head. Bruno always said, β€˜If you don’t know what to do, just go for a simple attack.’ So I did. And I won.”

The 5–4 group match victory over Saudi Arabia’s Ahad Bin Muammar wasn’t just a win. It was a quiet moment of belongingβ€”proof that she was meant to be here.

Gaby, a former Olympic referee and lifelong fencing educator, had trained athletes across Europe and Southeast Asia. But in Cambodia, he became more than a technicianβ€”he became family.

β€œHe never shouted,” Narita said. β€œEven when we had nothing, he gave us his old gear. He treated us like his own children.”

Their final phone call, just a month before his death in Indonesia, still replays in her memory.

β€œHe asked, β€˜How are we? Is the technical side growing?’ He just wanted to know if we were okay.”

When his wife delivered the news, Narita was heartbroken. But even now, when she fences, she often thinks of his voiceβ€”quiet, steady, and encouraging. It feels, at times, as if he’s still there, guiding her hand.

Training on concrete, fencing with honesty

Narita’s path to the FISU Games was paved with hardshipβ€”not because she was alone, but because of where and how she trained.

In Phnom Penh, Cambodia’s national fencers often practice on concreteβ€”in parking lots or open school yards. There are no scoring machines to register hits, no lights to signal points, and often, no one to fence with at all.

β€œWe eye everything. If we get touched, we say so. That’s how we fenceβ€”on trust.”

A few private clubs exist in the city, but they’re expensive and out of reach for most. Narita trained alone, learning from YouTube and hoping someoneβ€”anyoneβ€”would say yes to a spar.

β€œSometimes I’d ask other athletes, β€˜Can you warm up with me?’” she said. β€œBut they were always with their own teams. I felt invisible.”

A bout worth more than a medal

Despite it all, Narita won one of her pool matches at Rhine-Ruhr 2025β€”that narrow 5–4 victory that meant the world to her.

β€œI didn’t just win a bout. I proved something,” she said, her voice cracking. β€œI don’t have a coach. I don’t have facilities. But I still made it here. And I made a point.”

Even though she didn’t advance, she walked away with pride.

β€œI’m proud of myself,” she said, her voice calm but firm. β€œCambodia may not have much, but we have heart.”

As Cambodia’s only female sabre fencer, Narita hopes to inspire more girls to pick up the bladeβ€”and honour the man who once believed in her. When asked what she would say to Gaby now, she paused, then smiled.

β€œI did it. I came out of Cambodia. I fought. I won,” she said. β€œI think you’d be proud of me. I hope you saw it.”

Medallists in the women’s individual sabre event on Saturday included Hayoung Jeon from the Republic of Korea, who took gold, Hungary’s Anna Spiesz with silver, as well as third-place finishers Chirika Takahashi of Japan and Summer Fay Sit from Hong Kong.

The Young Reporters Programme exemplifies FISU’s commitment to more than sports competitions. At every FISU World University Games, a group of talented aspiring sports journalists are chosen to cover the competit

Perfect weather greets residents, proving that β€˜Anything is Possible in America’ on its 249th birthday

It was the perfect day, weatherwise, to celebrate the 4th of July. Throngs of people from near and far lined the sidewalks of Solvang to celebrate America’s 249th anniversary of its Independence Day with a patriotic parade whose theme this year was β€œAnything is Possible in America.”

The Grand Marshals of this year’s parade were Kay and Walt Alves. They moved to the Valley in 1959, and for the past 66 years, they have been steeped in volunteering. The couple has donated countless hours to Old Mission Santa Ines, the San Lorenzo Seminary and the Seminary Foundation, and the Santa Ynez Valley Historical Museum. But above all, the Alveses have been committed to the Rotary and Rotary International, both actively fundraising for Rotary’sscholarship program, with the two of them always cooking for Old Santa Ynez Days and Danish Days.

There were 74 entries in this year’s colorful parade, all bedecked with red, white, and blue and the American flag. Following the singing of the national anthem by sixth-grader Evie Gerritsen, daughter of Griffin and Gigi Gerritsen, the parade started promptly at 10 a.m. with the Color Guard American Legion Post #160 leading the way, soon followed by the Alveses as Grand Marshals.

After that, the parade included several dignitaries, including the Solvang and Buellton mayors and City Councilmembers; newly named 2025 Danish Queen Addie Madrid, riding in a 1936 Ford Roadster; 2025 Youth Rec Queen Kacy Caplan with SYV Youth Recreation; and Miss Santa Ynez Old Days Rodeo Queen Hailee Taylor.

Many local organizations were present at the parade, including the Solvang Chamber of Commerce, Solvang Senior Center, Atterdag Village, and Solvang Theaterfest. Santa Ynez High School sports programs were represented, among them the varsity and JV football teams β€” some of whom jumped off the back of the trailer and did push-ups β€” as well as players from the water polo and girls volleyball squads.

Many entries came to entertain and perform, such as local parade and event staple Garcia Dance Studio of Lompoc, Pacific Flips Gymnastics, and the dancing horses of Cuadras del Valle de Lompoc.

And there were the different vehicles that traveled down Mission Drive. They included military vehicles from the Flat Fender Friends, vintage cars from the Santa Maria Model A’s Ford Club, a coffinmobile right out of β€œThe Munsters,” and of course, the Viking Ship steered by the Vikings from Solvang.

β€œI love that I belong to this community,” said Becky Sutherland of Buellton. β€œThe parade celebrates belonging here.”

After the parade, a 4th of July celebration was held all day, topped off with an evening of fireworks at the Santa Ines Mission.

Before the fireworks, though there was plenty to keep the crowd busy on the lawn in front of the mission. The area was full of food trucks with all varieties of cuisine, along with several vendors selling their products, as well as rides and activities for the kids. On the main stage, musical artists like King Bee, Jayden Secor, The Molly Ringwald Project, and DJ Peete had the crowds dancing.

Many people, though, chose to relax on the berm and wait for darkness to fall for the fireworks show.

Two of them were Celeste and Cathy Drach, who had seat right at the front, and they had to come early and get them.

β€œThey allow us to come out and reserve a spot and we got to claim on Wednesday (July 2),” Celeste Drach said. β€œAnd there were people who got theirs earlier; I think the earliest I heard was June 30.”

Once it got dark and the berm filled up and it was time.

Incoming Santa Ynez Valley Rotary Board President Jennifer Hertler addressed the crowd, thanking the crowd and crediting the Solvang Rotary Club for their great job on the parade. And after a rousing version of the national anthem from recent SYHS graduate Ruby Andreu, the crowd enjoyed a magnificent fireworks show, again put on by local pyrotechician Kief Adler, which elicited many β€œoohs” and β€œaahs.”
