Trump administration officials sparked a huge protest on Sunday in a Boston suburb after immigration agents detained a high school student on his way to volleyball practice while they were seeking his father.

The high schooler in question, 18-year-old Marcelo Gomes Da Silva, entered the United States on a student visa, according to a lawsuit filed on his behalf after his arrest. While his student visa status has lapsed, he is eligible for and intends to apply for asylum.

Nonetheless, the head of US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (Ice) on Monday defended his agency’s actions, saying the teen in question was “in this country illegally and we’re not going to walk away from anybody”.

Gomes was arrested on Saturday in Milford, Massachusetts, where he lives.

Ice’s acting director, Todd Lyons, and Patricia Hyde – who directs the agency’s enforcement and removal operations in Boston – acknowledged Gomes was not the target of the immigration investigation that led to his arrest and that authorities instead were seeking his father, who remains at large.

But the Milford high school student had been driving his father’s vehicle when he was arrested following a traffic stop, Lyons said. Lyons said that when authorities encounter someone in the country illegally, “we will take action on that”.

“We’re doing the job that Ice should have been doing all along,” he said. “We enforce all immigration laws.”

The state’s Democratic governor, Maura Healey, said she was “disturbed and outraged” by Gomes’s arrest. And hundreds rallied in Milford on Sunday to protest against Gomes’s detention.

A federal judge issued an emergency order on Sunday preventing authorities from transferring Gomes out of Massachusetts for at least 72 hours in response to his lawsuit arguing that he was unlawfully detained.

Ten University of Wisconsin track and field athletes fared well enough last week at the NCAA West First Round in College Station, Texas, to qualify for the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships.

Seven men and three women — including one woman who qualified for two events — will head to Eugene, Oregon, for the championship events. It’s a familiar spot for the Badgers, who were there for the Big Ten Conference meet earlier this season.

3 takeaways from Wisconsin football adding 3-star defensive lineman to 2026 recruiting class

Here are the athletes that will continue their seasons beginning June 11.

Women

Taylor Kesner

What to know: Taylor Kesner is the nation’s only women’s athlete to qualify for a spot in Eugene for both the javelin and discus.

People are also reading…

Kesner started the meet with an 11th-place finish in the javelin, marking 171 feet, 10 inches, to place second in school history in the event.

It was particularly impressive, given that Kesner said she doesn’t train javelin throws as much as other events, per a Wisconsin news release.

She finished her weekend with a 189-8 heave in the discus, marking another personal best and another second-place all-time distance for the program.

Chloe Lindeman

What to know: Chloe Lindeman added to her solid résumé in the hammer throw. A three-time All-American in the indoor event, Lindeman is going to the outdoor championships for the first time.

Emma Kelley

Emma Kelley, center, runs in the 800 meters at the NCAA West First Round on Saturday in College Station, Texas. Kelley finished in 2:01.87 to qualify for the NCAA Outdoor Championships.

She threw 212-0 to place sixth in College Station, easily clearing the top-12 mark needed to advance.

Emma Kelley

What to know: Emma Kelley, a multi-time national champion in Division III, is set to compete in the Division I championships in the 800 meters for the first time.

Kelley ran the event in 2:1.87, good for her personal best and the third-fastest time in program history.

Men

Joseph White

What to know: Another former Division III champion who is now competing for the Badgers, Joseph White is also set to make his outdoor Division I championship debut in the shot put.

White placed second in College Station with a 65-2 ¼ mark. After a few throws were less than what he’d hoped for, his best toss came on his last attempt.

Throwers

Jason Swarens, left, Cole Hooper, center, and Joseph White pose after each qualifying for the NCAA Outdoor Championships in their respective events.

Jason Swarens

What to know: Jason Swarens was right behind teammate White in the shot put, placing third with a distance of 64-11 ½.

The reigning Big Ten champion will look for another big outdoor title meet after placing second in the country in 2024.

Cole Hooper

What to know: Cole Hooper had to wait a while before finally securing his qualification.

He took third in his flight of the hammer throw, going 216-7. He had to wait for the fourth group to finish, but he ultimately took eighth and will throw in Eugene for the first time.

Adam Spencer

What to know: Adam Spencer, a 2024 Olympian for Australia, needed 3:46.78 to place 13th overall in the 1,500 and second in his heat.

Spencer was the runner-up in the event at the national championships in 2024.

Jalen Williams

What to know: Jalen Williams was the fastest sprinter for the Badgers, taking third in his heat and eighth in total in the 400 meters.

Meet the 12-member Class of 2025 for the Wisconsin Athletics Hall of Fame

The Big Ten runner-up crossed the line in 45.78.

Patrick Hilby

What to know: Patrick Hilby is continuing his fantastic freshman outdoor season.

Hilby won his heat and placed 10th overall with a time of 1:47.30 in the 800.

Andrew Casey

What to know: Andrew Casey actually recorded the same official time as teammate Hilby, marking 1:47.30.

His actual time, though the NCAA marks to just the hundredth of a second, was 1:47.295, as opposed to 1:47.294 from Hilby. It was good enough for 11th overall and a qualification.

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. –  CSUN senior setter Donovan Constable and redshirt sophomore opposite Jalen Phillips were among  21 athletes selected to train with the 2025 Men’s U23 National Team for the NORCECA U23 Pan American Cup, July 27-August 4 in Guatemala City, Guatemala.

The selected 21 athletes will gather for a training block at the National Team Training Center in Anaheim, Calif., from July 20-27. From this pool, 12 athletes will be chosen to represent the United States in Guatemala.

Constable and Phillips both have previous USA Volleyball experience, as each was selected to the 2024 Men’s Collegiate National Team that trained in Anaheim last summer.

“I’m incredibly proud of Jalen and Donovan for earning spots on the U23 USA Team,” said CSUN head coach Theo Edwards. “They’ve put in the work, and now they’re being rewarded with an opportunity that will challenge and elevate them in every way. Having spent years coaching internationally with USA programs, I know how powerful these experiences can be — not just for sharpening skills on the court, but for building character, leadership, and resilience off it. This is a huge step in their journey, and I couldn’t be more excited to watch them grow through it. They’re representing all of us with pride.”

McKendree University men’s head coach Nickie Sanlin will lead the team, assisted by four-time Olympian Reid Priddy (Indoor Volleyball Club) and Luke Reynolds (Pepperdine).

“I am incredibly honored to lead this talented group of athletes alongside such a dedicated and skilled staff,” Sanlin said. “Representing our country with ‘USA’ across our chests is a privilege we don’t take lightly, and I am excited for the opportunity to compete and grow together on this stage.”

The roster features many stars from collegiate programs across the country. Several athletes bring impressive resumes, including past gold medals and MVP honors from international competitions.

Federal immigration officials are defending the arrest of a high school student who was detained on his way to volleyball practice.

Todd Lyons, acting director of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Boston field office, said the 18-year-old was taken into custody Saturday because he is in the country illegally.

“We were looking for his father,” Lyons said at a news conference Monday. “Obviously, he isn’t father of the year. He brought his son up here illegally as well.”

Lyons said officers initiated a traffic stop on a vehicle the teen was driving and determined he was in the U.S. unlawfully. He emphasized that ICE agents have the authority to detain individuals who are in the country illegally.

“I didn’t say he was dangerous. I said he’s in this country illegally, and we’re not going to walk away from anybody,” Lyons told reporters.

He added that his agency has taken in nearly 1,500 immigrants into custody in Massachusetts in May.

The teen will appear before an immigration judge and will have the opportunity to post bond, Lyons said. The teen’s father has not turned himself in, he added.

Friends told NBC News that the student was born in Brazil and has attended school in the district since the age of 6.

The arrest has sparked backlash in the community, with protests erupting and local officials demanding answers.

“I’m disturbed and outraged by reports that a Milford High School student was arrested by ICE on his way to volleyball practice,” Massachusetts Gov. Maura Healey said in a statement. “Local officials and law enforcement have been left in the dark with no heads-up and no answers to their questions.”
