BROOKINGS, S.D. — South Dakota State rounds out the regular season at the University of South Dakota, while a few distance runners head to Iowa State University for Power Conference competition on Friday evening.

HEAD COACH ROD DEHAVEN

“This weekend presents another opportunity for our teams to line up against some quality competition. The coaches are looking for improvements as we dial in for the conference championships. The student-athletes are fighting to get on the conference roster, which should produce some good marks.”

USD TWILIGHT

A vast majority of the team will be competing at the USD Twilight on Friday evening. Field events begin at 2:30 p.m. with pole vault, and running events will follow at 3:00 p.m. at Lillibridge Track in Vermillion, S.D.

CYCLONE TWILIGHT

A few members of the distance squad will be traveling to Ames, Iowa, for the Cyclone Twilight on Friday night. Competition begins at 3:00 p.m., however, the Jackrabbit squad is slated to start after 7:30 p.m.

ATHLETES TO WATCH

Hunter Wallster will be returning this year as the former hammer throw champion of last year’s outdoor conference championship. This past indoor track season, the senior clutched gold in the weight throw with a personal record of 68-00.05 (20.74m) and will undoubtedly be interesting to watch in his final run as a Jackrabbit.

Caiden Fredrick saw an outstanding start to the outdoor season. The sophomore dominated the discus throw at the USD Challenge with a mark of 187-00 (57.00m) to win the event and set a new South Dakota State program record. Fredrick’s mark of 57.00m is currently the 38th-best mark in the nation.

Brielle Dixon will be one to keep an eye on this year as the senior enters the outdoor season as a former all-league finisher in the 100-hurdles and an NCAA West First Round qualifier. Along with her successful run last season, Dixon turned heads throughout this past indoor season as she steadily improved her 60-hurdle time, resulting in an 8.16 60-hurdle personal record, a top-25 time in the nation. Dixon clocked her record at the Summit League Indoor Conference Championship, where she won the event and set a new meet record.

LAST TIME OUT

On Friday night at the Steve Scott Invitational, hosted by UC Irvine, Hunter Wallster took first in the men’s hammer throw with a mark of 196-06.00. His first-place mark was just under 12 feet in front of the runner-up in the competition. Rylan McDowell posted a runner-up finish in the men’s long jump. McDowell jumped 24-01.50 to place him sixth on the program’s top-10 all-time list.

On Saturday in California, Brielle Dixon took second at 13.50 in the 100m hurdles, and Pierre Lear took first in 110m hurdles with a time of 14.02. In the 400m dash, Erika Kuntz moved up the program’s top-10 list with a 3rd place finish and a time of 55.13. Gunnar Gunderson put his name on the program’s top-10 list with a 400m hurdles performance time of 52.97, good for sixth in program history and 3rd in the event.

Over at the USD Tune Up, Sam Castle improved his PR in the 800m with a time of 1:50.70 to best his mark on the top-10 list. Finally, freshman Harley Johnson put up a huge PR in the javelin with a throw of 144-01.00, to finish third in the event and fifth in program history.

RANKINGS

USTFCCCA released its conference and regional rankings on Tuesday. The men’s Jackrabbit squad stayed put at first in the Summit League and 12th in the Midwest. The women’s team moved to second place in the conference and held steady at 16th place in the region.

Abramovich also went on to play at Cal Poly and Middle Tennessee. She had 161 digs and 44 aces over her career at MTSU, playing in 52 matches for the Blue Raiders.

As a prep, her and her team won the Israeli High School Championship every season of her career. With Galili, she qualified for the International School Federation (ISF) World Schools Championship in both 2014 and 2016, competing against the top high school teams from each country. In club, she played for Hapoel Kfar Saba and won the Israeli National Championship in 2017. Abramovich also competed with Israel’s National Team at the 2016 European Championships.

In the coaching ranks, Abramovich most recently served as a graduate assistant coach at Conference USA-member Middle Tennessee.
