FARMVILLE, Va. – Three-pointers have always played a big role in Lancer wins inside the Joan Perry Brock Center, but this season they meant a little bit more.
At the beginning of the year, Longwood athletics partnered with local State Farm Agent Edgar Jones for the 3 for 3 Challenge to raise money to support local youth sports.
Jones committed to donating $3 for every made three by the Lancer men and women in the 3 for 3 Challenge. As a result, more than $1,000 was raised after the Lancers sank more than 350 threes.
“Being able to partner with Longwood Athletics—all while supporting PEFYA—was so much fun for me this year,” said Jones. “It was very exciting to watch games and know that every three-pointer made meant that money was being donated to support local sports in the Farmville community!”
The men’s team knocked down 206 triples, and the women’s team made 149 as well. The donations will go to support the Prince Edward Farmville Youth Association (PEFYA), with the organization supporting hundreds of youth in Prince Edward County.
“The excitement in the Joan Perry Brock Center comes from the community members that gather together to cheer on Longwood’s basketball teams, and we look for ways to give back to that community,” said Longwood Deputy Athletic Director for External Operations Austin Shaver. “We’re happy to continue our partnership with State Farm Agent Edgar Jones for the 3 for 3 Challenge to benefit such a wonderful community organization and the selfless people who run it. All of our student-athletes grew up playing in leagues like PEFYA and would not be competing at Longwood without the community support that keeps them running. We appreciate Edgar and his support for the Farmville and Prince Edward communities.”
The Lancers ranked second in the Big South in attendance in both men’s and women’s basketball this year. There were three sellouts during the season. In addition, the women made a run to the Big South Championship Game, finishing as runners-up, and they played in the WNIT.
