AVP, the biggest and longest-running professional volleyball league, will play matches in an NBA arena for the first time this weekend in Inglewood.

A crew picked up 16 dump truck loads from a quarry in Palm Springs, delivering 300 tons of sand into the Intuit Dome for AVP League matches on Friday and Saturday.

The crew constructed a wooden sandbox barrier to protect the arena floor. The sand, pre-washed and compacted upon arrival, was dumped into an 18-inch wooden frame, with elements such as hospitality added to help remove debris from the air.

“If all goes well, it’s about a six- to eight-hour build from start to finish with the court,” said Logan Dan, head of operations for AVP Professional Beach Volleyball Tours. “It takes about six hours to build the court specifically.”

Once the event concludes, the crew dismantles the frame and removes the sand using equipment that looks like a modified small tractor.

“We break the box open and use a skid steer with a box broom attachment — it sweeps up a lot of the sand,” Dan said.

Although indoor beach volleyball is unusual, the AVP’s new league model — introduced last year — has made it possible to bring tournaments to unconventional venues. The league is investing in creative ways to grow accessibility and exposure.

“What that has allowed us to do is to bring volleyball into different areas that it might not be,” Dan said. “For instance, we’re going to New York next week, and we’ll be putting a court in Central Park, right in Wollman Rink, where they normally have ice skating in the winter and pickleball in the summer.”

Conditions for beach volleyball differ significantly between outdoor and indoor play. Sun, wind and heat heavily influence outdodor players’ performance and court dynamics. Indoors, the environment remains cooler and still, free from elements such as whipping winds or scorching sun.

“It’s so close and loud and intimate that it creates that very cool environment,” Logan said.

AVP declined to disclose what it costs to build courts in unconventional locations such as the Intuit Dome.

Logan said AVP staff hope fans will enjoy a fun, family-oriented community environment that features more seats close to the action than a typical beach volleyball court.

The schedule

AVP League matches start Friday at 5 p.m. with the L.A. Launch playing the San Diego Smash in the first match.

Doors open Saturday at 4 p.m., with the Palm Beach Passion playing the L.A. Launch during the first match.

Tickets started at $43.50 apiece.

What’s at stake

The AVP League format differs from traditional tournaments. A men’s duo and women’s duo represent a city and their combined records determine position in league standings. At the end of league play, one of eight cities will be crowned the AVP League champion. The playoffs feature a postseason tournament seeded based on each duo’s record during the season. The tournament splits into male and female competition groups, with the winning duo in each group earning the top prize.

The top two teams in the league standings are the L.A. Launch and the Palm Beach Passion. L.A. Launch is undefeated, while Palm Beach Passion is 6–2.

Who is playing in Inglewood?

Four of the league’s eight city teams will be represented. The lineup includes numerous Olympians, USC alums and a former NBA player.

CLARKSVILLE, TN (CLARKSVILLE NOW) – The Clarksville Christian Centurions volleyball team hosted the Pleasant View Christian Warriors at CCS for their first match of the season on Tuesday. Despite barely pulling out the second set, which needed extra points to decide, the Centurions swept the Warriors three sets to none to start the season 1-0.

The Centurions came out of the gates swinging, building a quick lead in the first set. Pleasant View tied the set at 11 all, but a 7-0 Clarksville run, highlighted by some thunderous kills from Junior Marley Spires, led to a Warrior timeout, and the Centurions took set one 25-15.  In set two, it was back and forth, and neither team got out in front by more than four at any point. Even though they needed a few extra rallies, the Centurions pulled out set two 28-26, finished off by a kill from freshman Khloe Blount.

“Volleyball can have a huge momentum shift with just one play, and you saw that on display tonight,” said Centurions head coach Martha Sheffield. “We’ve been teaching them to have a next point mentality, and to have it in their mind that every point is a game point. Nobody makes an error by themselves, so instead of individualizing things, we want our girls to know that their teammates have their backs.”

Clarksville Christian took that second set win and ran with it. Led by junior Kinsey Blount getting her hands on nearly every ball, the Centurions jumped out to a 13-3 lead in the third set, and eventually won it 25-9 to sweep the Warriors and start their season with a win.

For Sheffield, she’s happy with a win, but knows that there’s a lot of room to grow over these next few weeks.

“We have a tougher schedule this year than these girls have had in the past,” said Sheffield. “It doesn’t matter where you are right now; it matters how good you are in the postseason. This is a great way to start, but we don’t want to get complacent. This game was great, but we’re going to get better tomorrow when we step in the gym.”

Returning for a 17th year, the Terrier Twelve recognizes the top achievements of Boston University teams and student-athletes from the previous year. Check back each Monday and Wednesday this summer as we unveil this year’s Terrier Twelve on GoTerriers.com.’

Claiming the top spot in this year’s Terrier Twelve is women’s track & field, which won its third Patriot League indoor title and was represented on the national stage in each of the NCAA cross country, indoor track & field and outdoor track & field championships by Vera Sjöberg.

BU had a historic season as the team set 10 school records, finished second or first in each of the three championships, claimed five major Patriot League awards, three Scholar-Athlete of the Year honors and two USTFCCCA regional awards.

Beginning in the cross country season, the Terriers finished as runners-up at the Patriot League Championships with 36 points, the best mark in program history. Sjöberg won the Patriot League title with a time of 19:45.9 and was joined on the First Team All-Patriot League by sophomore Ola Szulska (fifth place) and senior Daisy Liljegren (seventh place).

The Terriers then went to the NCAA Northeast Regionals and Sjöberg took seventh, earning her All-Northeast Region team honors and qualifying her for the NCAA Cross Country Championships in Madison, Wisconsin. The Terriers had their best team finish since 2008 as they picked up eighth place. At the national meet, Sjöberg earned 42nd place, just two spots out from an All-America honor. She was BU’s first representative at the meet since 2021 and the only Patriot League representative.

At the Patriot League Indoor Championships, the Terriers scored 166 points to win its first title since 2016, the second-most points scored indoors in program history. Director of Track & Field Grant Cartwright was named the Patriot League Coach of the Year while Sjöberg picked up Highest Point Scorer and Track Athlete of the Meet honors and junior Peace Omonzane took home Field Athlete of the Meet honors.

Sjöberg won the mile, 3000m and 5000m titles, becoming the first athlete in League history to win all three of those events in back-to-back years and. She set a meet record in the mile with a 4:40.71 time. Omonzane won both the long and triple jump and set a school and meet record in the long jump with a 6.20m leap.

Also taking home gold medals were junior Ellie Roan (weight throw) and freshman Olivia Hughes (pentathlon) as BU earned seven golds and 12 total medals, including a sweep of the triple jump podium.

Sjöberg, the Stockholm, Sweden native, continued on to run at her first NCAA Indoor Championships in Virgina Beach, Virginia and finished eighth in the mile, capturing First Team All-America status — BU’s first recipient of the award indoors since 2014.

At the Outdoor Championships, the Terriers earned a second-place finish, once again relying on Sjöberg (Track Athlete of the Meet) and Omonzane (Field Athlete of the Meet), who helped bring in five of the team’s six gold medals as BU finished with 167 points. BU finished with 30 medals total.

Omonzane continued her horizontal jumps dominance as she swept the long and triple jump gold medals again and set meet records in both events, including a school record in the long jump (6.44m). She became the first Patriot League athlete to win all four horizontal jumps gold medals since 2012. Sjöberg won three gold medals, taking crowns in the 1500m, 5000m and 4x800m. In all three of those events, she set meet records with times of 4:14.37, 16:11.40 and 8:39.22, respectively.

Roan once again won a gold medal, taking the crown in the hammer throw for the second straight year, and BU concluded with 17 total medals. Both horizontal jumps podiums were swept by the Terriers for the first time since BU joined the Patriot League in 2014.

Five student-athletes went on to compete at the NCAA East First Rounds in Jacksonville, Florida: Sjöberg (1500m, 5000m), Omonzane (long jump, triple jump), Roan (hammer throw), freshman Caroline Collins (1500m) and senior Asia Hamilton (long jump). From there, Sjöberg advanced to the NCAA Championships in the 1500m and the 5000m, marking the first time in program or Patriot League history that a woman would compete in two events at the same NCAA Outdoor Championships.

Against a stacked field and in front of a roaring crowd Eugene, Oregon, Sjöberg put on a historic performance as she finished second nationally in the 5000m — the best finish by a Patriot League or BU athlete ever at the NCAA Outdoor Championships — and earned First Team All-America honors. She also took 11th in the 1500m and was named a Second Team All-American.

Following the season, Sjöberg was named the USTFCCCA Northeast Region Track Athlete of the Year. At the 2025 Scarlet & White Awards, the now-graduate was named the recipient of the Mildred Barnes Award and BU’s Woman of the Year.
