Saying Boo
Look, there are wrinkles in almost everything.
But let’s give credit when it’s due.
Boo Carter covering the tab for a new set of Brainerd High School football uniforms is cool.
And smart.
Sure, some could suggest self-serving — the Boo logo was a “special” touch, and kudos to the kid for trademarking that ghost emblem — considering his recent run of bad press.
But it’s still a kind way to give back to his hometown program. A program, mind you, that he never played a single down for in high school.
Here’s the story from TFP preps ace Patrick MacCoon in today’s TFP.
So bully for you Boo, and here’s hoping this is the springboard to a long stretch of the Boo narrative being about ball.
Which brings us to …
In truth, the juxtaposition of Boo peeling off six-plus dimes for new Brainerd unis comes at the same time this story from The Athletic dropped on what other players are spending their NIL cash on.
Look, we have all bemoaned NIL in one way or another. It’s ruining the game. It’s all about the money. Turn down that loud rock n roll. Stay off my lawn.
We get it.
But it’s always been about the money. NIL does not crack the top three of issues I’d fix in college football. (That’s portal, playoff expansion and true rules and enforcement of such, which I guess could be a lot of NIL so, maybe top three.)
But The Athletic story had dozens of NIL narratives.
As you would expect, there were a parking lot of power cars purchased with NIL coin. Snazzy clothes, watches and trips, too.
UGA QB1 Gunnar Stockton spent a sizable chunk of change playing golf over the summer, according to the story.
Texas Tech QB Behren Morton bought land for hunting and fishing. TT teammate Lee Hunter bought a house for his momma in Mobile, and fellow Red Raiders DL Rommello Height bought his momma a Yukon and his daddy an apartment in the A-T-L. (Side note: Texas Tech is spending some NIL cabbage, friends.)
Wanna hear two of the cooler ones other than Boo:
› Iowa State QB1 Rocco Becht bought Xboxes for the pediatric rooms of a local hospital outside of Ames, Iowa.
› Baylor QB1 Sawyer Robertson bought customized Yeti coolers and tumblers with the Baylor logo for every teammate and BU staff member.
Take us out to the ballgame
OK, what started as a random suggestion — I think it was from JTC a few weeks ago — has become a snowball over here at 400 East 11th St.
Here are the details for the 5-at-10 gathering at AT&T for a Lookouts game next Thursday, Sept. 4. It sounds pretty cool, and I am looking forward to it.
Look, you guys and gals make this thing the treat that it is, so we’re going to tip the visor to you.
The first 100 folks who sign up will get admission to the game and a $5 concession voucher.
There’s even a chance that one of the crew will get to throw out the first pitch.
Side question for the group: Which 5-at-10 regular would be most likely to throw a strike? Vegas odds have SignalEsquire and BackupQB listed as co-favorites. But we all have to remember that the force is strong in Vader, so there’s that. Which is fat.
Where were we? Ah yes, the Lookouts. I am really looking forward to it — hope you guys can make it.
This and that
› Cal Raleigh is having one of the greatest seasons ever by a) a switcher hitter, b) any catcher ever, and c) anyone with close to a nickname as giggle-worthy as “The Big Dumper.” He hit homer No. 50 last night and is on pace for 61. He has 107 RBIs despite hitting just .247.
› Speaking of Boo, and since we are obligated by the rules and all, here’s Paschall with UT’s offensive unknowns and UT HC Josh Heupel saying he expects Boo Carter to play Saturday against Syracuse.
› Plays played. You know. Fight Club, after all.
› Did not watch it — didn’t realize it was on until too late — but the Venus Williams comeback tour is fun.
› Braves played. Braves lost. To the Marlins.
› The Beth and Rip spinoff from “Yellowstone” will be called “The Dutton Ranch.” And it is being reported that Annette Bening is joining the cast. That’s some added star power, friends.
› Nike has made Caitlin Clark its latest signature athlete. Smart move for the Swoosh Crew.
›NFL cut day is today, with a 4 p.m. deadline. Here’s a live scrolling update.

› True or false, you will watch “The Dutton Ranch” outta respect for Rip, even if the end of “Yellowstone” was less than satisfying.
As for today, Aug. 26, let’s review:
Macaulay Culkin is 45 today. KEVIN!
“Hey Jude” was released on this day in 1968. It’s a good one.
Mother Teresa would have been 115 today. She was a good one.
Rushmore of “Mother” in titles. Keep it clean, Spy.
