McLaren’s Lando Norris has topped first practice at Formula 1’s Spanish Grand Prix, heading Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton in Barcelona.
Friday’s first free practice session in hot conditions was used as a testing ground for a brace of upgrades across most of the teams, as well as the first session in which teams ran stiffer front wings to comply with the FIA’s latest technical directive.
As such, the first half hour of the session was largely run on Pirelli’s hardest C1 compound as teams completed correlation work to trial their new parts and match them with existing simulation data.
Teams also tested steel skid blocks in a bid to find solutions to the grass fires which plagued April’s Japanese Grand Prix, and were believed to be caused by hot sparks coming off the existing titanium skids.
In order to gather data, one car per team trialled the steel skids on Friday, which are believed to be 750 grams heavier and wear quicker.
Home hero Fernando Alonso led the early running on hards before McLaren’s Norris took over. But times started becoming more representative after the halfway mark, as evidenced by Sauber driver Nico Hulkenberg temporarily taking second.

On soft tyres Charles Leclerc took top before being overhauled by Red Bull’s Verstappen and then Norris, whose time of 1m13.718s was over three tenths clear of the world champion’s lap.
Hamilton was third ahead of Ferrari team-mate as the Scuderia trialled substantial updates, with the second McLaren of Oscar Piastri in fifth.
Liam Lawson continued Racing Bull’s competitive trajectory with sixth ahead of Haas man Oliver Bearman and his team-mate Isack Hadjar. Red Bull’s Yuki Tsunoda and Alpine driver Pierre Gasly completed the top 10.
The one-hour opening session ran without major incidents, with Haas stand-in Ryo Hirakawa taking a gravel trip excursion on the latest FP1 outing for Toyota’s WEC driver, this time instead of Esteban Ocon.
The other reserve driver on FP1 duties was F2 frontrunner Victor Martins, who took over Alex Albon’s Williams for the session.

Ducati’s Marquez ends Bagnaia streak to win Italian Grand Prix

Marc Marquez extended his dominance in the riders’ championship with a hard-fought victory at the Italian Grand Prix on Sunday, edging out his brother Alex in a thrilling battle at Mugello.
Gresini Racing’s Alex briefly led the race early on before Marc took control, while Fabio Di Giannantonio of VR46 Racing claimed third place after snatching the final podium spot from his Italian compatriot Francesco Bagnaia.
Home favorite Bagnaia also led the race in the initial stages but the Italian, who had won the last three races at Mugello, was overshadowed by the Marquez brothers and could only finish fourth in front of his home fans.
Marc’s victory was also the 93rd win of his career across all classes, matching his motorcycle number, and the Spaniard celebrated by planting a Ducati flag in front of the home fans who once saw him as a rival when he was with Honda.
“Amazing feeling … three Ducatis on the podium, to win here (at Mugello) in the red,” said Marc, who now leads Alex by 40 points while Bagnaia is 110 points back in third.
“I already understood this morning that was super special for them, even for me, because I feel part of them. Super happy.
“We managed the race… I was calm and then when the tyres dropped a bit, I started to give everything. Happy to take the 37 points in this amazing weekend.”
Fresh from claiming his historic 100th career pole with a blistering lap record and Saturday’s unlikely sprint victory, Marc found himself locked in a fraternal battle with Alex – a running theme this season.
The opening laps unfolded as a masterclass in close-quarter racing between the two factory Ducati machines – their special Italian Renaissance livery flashing through Mugello’s sweeping turns – while Alex stayed on their tail.
High-speed drama
The crowd erupted when Bagnaia briefly snatched the lead from Marc after turn one but what followed was high-speed drama as they traded positions, occasionally making heart-stopping contact with each other.
Disaster nearly struck when Bagnaia, pushing his bike to the limit, touched Marc’s rear tyre as he was forced to brake hard and surrender his position to Alex.
Fans in the grandstand witnessed a spectacular moment when all three riders thundered into turn one abreast, a three-wide gamble that saw Alex briefly seize control, drop to third on the brakes and then reclaim the lead moments later on the exit.
But Marc eventually broke free, leaving brother Alex to doggedly defend second position against a relentless Bagnaia.
However, the Italian did not have the late-race pace to catch up and he was soon forced to defend the final podium place, with Di Giannantonio looking to upstage his compatriot.
With two laps to go, Di Giannantonio made his move on turn seven as he squeezed past the twice champion and raced away to claim his first podium finish at Mugello.
“I knew that I had to risk a lot to take him but at the end, the last lap, I said, ‘Okay, let’s go for it,’ and we’ve done it,” Di Giannantonio said.
“My first podium in MotoGP Mugello, in front of this fantastic group of fans.”

Be sure to refresh this post throughout Sunday’s event as the Live Race Updates story will be updated regularly with the biggest moments from the 400-mile race around the 2.5-mile triangular track, including lead changes, crash replays, the winner of the race, finishing results, and more.
The Great American Getaway 400 Start Delayed (Weather)
Rain and lightning in the area at Pocono Raceway have led to the start of Sunday’s The Great American Getaway 400 to be delayed. Currently, track drying equipment is on track, attempting to keep the track in decent shape for when the light rain concludes.
NASCAR has not given an estimated time for the green flag for today’s race, and once one is communicated, we will update this story.
The Great American Getaway 400 Pre-Race Info
The Great American Getaway 400 will be televised on Prime Video, the final NASCAR Cup Series race to be covered by the streaming service this season. The Prime Video pre-race show will begin at 1:00 PM ET, and the official race broadcast will kick off on Prime Video at 2:00 PM ET.
The Motor Racing Network (MRN) and SiriusXM NASCAR Radio will provide the radio broadcast of Sunday’s race. For subscribers of the Max streaming service, NASCAR Driver Cam, which streams live in-car camera footage from every car in the field, will be available for today’s race.
The overall race purse, which teams will fight for their portion of in Sunday’s race, is a total of $11,055,250.
The race distance is 160 laps around the 2.5-mile triangular oval, which equates to a 400-mile race distance.
The Great American Getaway 400 will be broken up into three Stages. Stage 1 will end at the conclusion of Lap 30. Stage 2 will end at the conclusion of Lap 95. And the race is scheduled to finish at the end of Lap 160, barring an Overtime finish.
The winner of Stages 1 and 2 will be awarded one Playoff Point, and the overall race winner will be awarded five Playoff Points. The Playoff Points will be added to the reseeded point totals if the drivers make it into the NASCAR Cup Series Playoffs, and will be carried through each round of the Playoffs.
Ryan Blaney is the defending winner of this event, and Denny Hamlin is the all-time winningest driver in Pocono Raceway history as he has seven career victories at the Tricky Triangle.
William Byron Will Not Go to Backup Car After Qualifying Crash
The race weekend at Pocono Raceway got off to a fast start for William Byron, who led the way in NASCAR Cup Series practice in his No. 24 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet. However, things spiraled out of control, literally and figuratively, in qualifying.
As he was making his timed lap around the 2.5-mile triangle, Byron lost control of his car off of the tunnel turn. Byron’s car would scrape the outside wall with the right side, which briefly helped him stabilize his car, but he could not keep it wrangled, and would spin to the inside of the track.
Byron’s incident would conclude with a hard shot into the inside wall with the front end of his No. 24 Chevrolet.

While it looked initially like the No. 24 team would have to prepare a backup car for Sunday’s race, Rudy Fugle and the rest of the crew concluded that they could repair the primary car, which showed so much speed before the qualifying crash.

Byron clocked in 31st-fastest in the qualifying session, but due to unapproved adjustments for the crash damage, he was going to have to drop to the rear of the field regardless before the start of Sunday’s race.
Denny Hamlin Takes Pole in First Race Back Since Birth of Son
After his week off last weekend due to the birth of his third child, son Jameson, Denny Hamlin is back and he’s showing no signs of rust. The driver of the No. 11 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota streaked to the pole position for Sunday’s The Great American Getaway 400 at Pocono Raceway with a lap time of 52.144 seconds (172.599 mph) in Saturday’s qualifying session.
Hamlin was able to best Chris Buescher by a margin of 0.083 to collect his 44th career NASCAR Cup Series pole position.
Carson Hocevar, who has been embroiled in multiple controversies in recent weeks, will start from the third position on Sunday.

Cody Ware (Crash), Josh Berry (Broken Diffuser), Bubba Wallace (Starter) Unable to Take Qualifying Laps
Prior to Saturday’s qualifying session at Pocono Raceway, two drivers and teams encountered problems on track that prevented them from being able to post a lap in qualifying for Sunday’s The Great American Getaway 400.

Josh Berry was also scratched from qualifying when his No. 21 Wood Brothers Racing Ford Mustang Dark Horse bottomed out hard on a big bump in the track surface. As Berry’s car landed back on the track surface, the diffuser suffered damage, which required repairs in the garage.

Once qualifying began, Bubba Wallace, who was second-fastest in Saturday’s practice session, was unable to make it onto the track as his car wouldn’t start from the qualifying grid on pit road. According to Wallace’s crew chief Charles Denike, the No. 23 Toyota suffered an issue with the starter, which kept the car from turning over.

Brennan Poole also didn’t compete in qualifying as the No. 44 NY Racing Team Chevrolet failed pre-race inspection three times. As a result, Poole wasn’t allowed to participate in qualifying, will have to drop to the rear of the field before the race, and will be required to serve a pass-through penalty after the green flag on Sunday.

In a career spanning 22 years and 700 races, Jimmie Johnson has solidified his name as one of the all-time greats in motorsports history. With seven Cup Series championships and 83 wins under his belt, his journey at Hendrick Motorsports has been nothing short of legendary.
What sets Johnson apart from the rest? The answer lies in his unwavering partnership with the mastermind behind his success, Chad Knaus. As Johnson reminisces about his early days at Hendrick Motorsports, he credits Knaus as the driving force that propelled him to greatness.
Their collaboration was nothing short of extraordinary, clinching an unprecedented five consecutive championships from 2006 to 2010, followed by two more. Johnson attributes his success not only to Knaus but also to the core group of individuals who stood by his side throughout his illustrious career.

LONG POND, Pa. — Eight of the top 10 staters in today’s Cup race at Pocono Raceway have not won this season, making today’s race one that could potentially alter the playoff standings.
Ten races remain in the regular season, including today’s event before the playoffs begin.
While Denny Hamlin, a three-time winner this season, has the pole, Chris Buescher, who holds the final playoff spot, starts second.
Others without a win this season starting in the top 10 today are: Carson Hocevar (starting third), John Hunter Nemechek (fourth), Cole Custer (fifth), Chase Briscoe (sixth), Ty Gibbs (seventh), Tyler Reddick (eighth) and Daniel Suarez (10th).
Buescher, Briscoe and Reddick enter today’s race in a playoff spot.
The 160-lap event will set the seedings for the In-Season Challenge.
Go further into the field and 15 of the top 18 qualifiers have not won this season. That includes Erik Jones (starting 11th), Ryan Preece (13th), Brad Keselowski (14th), Zane Smith (15th), Austin Dillon (16th), Noah Gragson (17th) and Chase Elliott (18th).
Here is what else to watch for in today’s race (2 p.m. ET on Prime):
Differing strategies
Teams will be able to pit at Pocono without losing a lap provided they are no more than about 12 seconds behind the leader. That means those further behind likely will have to use a different strategy.
The back half of the field will be worth keeping an eye on.
William Byron had the fastest car in practice and wrecked in qualifying. The team was repairing the car with work to be finished this morning.
Bubba Wallace had a starter issue and didn’t even make a lap in qualifying. He’ll also be at the rear when the green flag waves. He enters the race 57 points above the cutline but starting this deep might keep him from scoring points in the first stage. He ranks sixth in the series in stage points.
“I don’t think you can get to panicked about it, you can’t change it,” said Denny Hamlin, co-owner of Wallace’s 23XI Racing car, about the possibility of Wallace not getting points in the first stage. “If you are Bubba Wallace it’s not something you did. I’m confident it’s not something the team did, it’s just one of those mechanical things where the anvil fell on your this time. It happens to others as well.
“It’s very easy for drivers and teams to get down about their bad luck, but everyone has it and usually washes itself out over time. I think they are running fast enough to be a playoff car and a lot of that is going to depend on who jumps up on the wild card races over the next 10 weeks, but I feel confident the 23 team will be a part of it.”
Denny Hamlin scored his 44th career Cup pole.
Another strategy to watch will be if anyone tries a three-stop strategy. Most teams pitted four times in last year’s race. Austin Cindric’s team pitted three times but finished 18th.
“We had a caution every time that I was on a tire disadvantage last year,” Cindric said. “ … I’m not sure it’s going to discourage us from, maybe not necessarily that strategy, but from going and trying to make up spots.”
Can Chase Elliott build momentum?
Chase Elliott seeks to score back-to-back top-10 finishes for the first time since late March and early April at Martinsville and Darlington.
Elliott is coming off a third-place finish at Mexico. Although he is on a 43-race winless drought, he’s been consistent enough to rank fourth in the points this season.
Cliff Daniels said he was ready to park Kyle Larson when they could gain no other positions in the finishing order.
So with 16 of 36 races run, has this been a good season for Elliott?
“That is a good question,” Elliott said. “Good? Sure, but it’s not where I want to be no doubt.
“I think for us there have been some high spots and to be honest, there have been weeks where we have run well where we have had a good finish… and I can go home and be like, ‘Man, we were in the mix, and we had good pace today.’
“… It’s the days and weekends where we are just not even relevant that I think are the most frustrating to me. We have had more of those than I would want to have and that we would want to have as a team.
“So, I think it’s been good but not satisfactory for myself or to our team, but there is still a lot of racing left in the season, and I think we have ourselves in a position to make a mediocre day alright. We can build from it, and we still have a chance.”
Denny’s unique double
Denny Hamlin seeks to score his second consecutive win of the season with a catch.
He won at Michigan, skipped the race in Mexico City for the birth of his son, and will look to win at Pocono — where his seven wins here make him the track’s all-time winningest driver.

Collet Breaks Through at Road America With First Win of Season – Speedway Digest

The wait finally is over for Caio Collet.
Collet passed championship leader Dennis Hauger with less than five laps remaining and drove away to win the Grand Prix of Road America on Sunday, his first INDY NXT by Firestone victory this season. Collet’s No. 76 HMD Motorsports car crossed the finish line 1.7093 seconds ahead of Hauger’s No. 28 Nammo car fielded by Andretti Global.
SEE: Race Results
2024 series Rookie of the Year Collet entered this event with three podium finishes in the first six races this season, including two runner-up finishes. His victory was the first this season for HMD Motorsports, as Hauger and fellow Andretti Global rookie teammate Lochie Hughes have combined to win every race.
“At the beginning of the season, we couldn’t match them, to be honest,” Collet said. “It was really frustrating. Every time we went on track, it was hard to be second or third. But we kept working hard, and we need to keep working because they are a great team with great drivers. We need to keep pushing.”
Hughes rounded out the podium finishers in the No. 26 McGinley Clinic/USF Pro Championship car after passing Josh Pierson in the No. 14 HMD Motorsports machine on the last of 20 laps around the 14-turn, 4.014-mile circuit. Pierson ended up tying his career-best finish of fourth.
Myles Rowe placed fifth in the No. 99 Abel/Force Indy car in the caution-free race.
Hauger led from the pole on an unseasonably hot day with air temperatures in the high 80s. Collet stayed close from the second starting position, keeping the gap around five- or six-tenths of a second as the duo marched away from the rest of the 19-car field.
Collet’s patience expired on Lap 16. He drove alongside Hauger on the long front straightway and made an outside pass in Turn 1 stick. Collet then eased away from Hauger over the last four laps.
“I kept up the pace, kept up the pressure,” Collet said. “Yesterday, I think I lost the pole to myself. Dennis did a phenomenal lap, but I think I left a bit in the tank and was very frustrated. Today I really wanted to give the win to the team.”
Said Hauger: “I think we’ve been on the back foot compared to Collet all weekend. We did everything right today, but they were just a bit stronger. I tried to do what I could, but it just wasn’t meant to be. Still a decent weekend.”
Hauger’s lead over second-place Hughes grew from 19 to 28 points with his fifth podium finish of the season. Collet is third, 70 points behind Hauger.
The next race is the INDY NXT by Firestone Grand Prix at Mid-Ohio on Sunday, July 6 at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course. It’s good track for Collet, who earned his sole previous INDY NXT victory there in July 2024.

Sunday’s Great American Getaway 400 at Pocono Raceway is scheduled for a 2 p.m. ET start. Weather, however, is threatening to delay the start of the race.
Pocono is currently asking fans to remain sheltered as the continued threat of a thunderstorm looms: “WEATHER UPDATE: There is a continued threat of a thunderstorm, including lightning, for this area. Please remain sheltered. Fan Stage and Victory Lane Stage Q&A Sessions are canceled. Stay tuned for more updates.”
According to Bob Pockrass of FOX Sports, the rain would need to stop by 12:30 p.m. for NASCAR to have a shot at starting the race on time. Pocono does not have lights and rain tires aren’t available. Pockrass projects the rain would need to cease by 3:00 p.m. to be able to race.
Obviously, NASCAR will come back and likely race Monday afternoon if the weather persists. But there’s a sold out crowd on site, ready to see the 17th Cup Series race of the season. This, “The Tricky Triangle,” is a big one. Including Pocono, only nine regular season races remain.
NASCAR heads to Pocono as playoffs approach
Ten drivers have clinched a spot in the postseason. Six spots are up for grabs. Will there be another surprise winner at Pocono? We saw one last week, as Shane van Gisbergen dominated the field at Mexico City.
But this is Pocono — Denny Hamlin‘s track. No, it’s not his hometown, but nobody has been better than Hamlin at Pocono. He has seven career victories at Pocono and his performance has been consistent throughout the different generations of cars.
Wouldn’t you know it, he’s on the pole for Sunday’s race. Hamlin is looking for his Cup best fourth win of the 2025 season.
