CANMORE – What’s better than one medal at nationals? Two medals.
The U17 and U16 girls of Rocky Mountain Volleyball Club’s (RMVC) brought home a pair of silver medals, respectively, at Volleyball Canada Youth Nationals from May 19-21 at the Edmonton Expo Centre, highlighting the growth of the sport in the valley with the club’s second and third national medals.
Over three days, the local teams went through an eight-team gauntlet in order to advance to the finals of their tiers.
In the gold medal game, the U17 girls matched up in an all-Alberta showdown against the Plamondon Volleyball Club Wolfpack.
“Everyone says, ‘I want to win,’ but they actually came in and demonstrated they wanted to win,” said U17 head coach, Spencer Bieri.
“Players who didn’t usually dive to the floor were diving on the ground, players who didn’t usually talk lots were now all of a sudden shouting and trying to help coordinate things. It was just great to see the kind of team that I always knew they could be actually show up to the court, which was amazing.”
Led on the court by team captain and setter, Rylee Batycki, a nucleus on the team to get the offence humming, the U17 girls battled through three sets (25-16; 19-25; 8-15) with the Wolfpack.
Throughout the tournament, players such as middle Juna Pressman, middle hitter Olivia Storms, and outside hitter Fiona Jonker stepped up their game. However, Bieri said what he was most impressed by was how the team came together throughout the entire season and into the national tournament.
“It’s like a big fight in hockey,” said Bieri. “After the fight, the entire team is all riled up and ready to fight for a win, and it’s the same thing in volleyball. Those folks who are not on the court are kind of the energy driver behind the team.”
He added that win or lose, the U17 girls were driven to improve in the sport.
“They always had a smile on their faces, they were always pushing and driving each other,” said Bieri. “From the coaches perspective, it was so much fun to kind of have that group of gals and I wouldn’t have traded them for the world.”
U16 girls bring ‘A-Game’ to nationals
For the second year in a row, the group of girls making up the U16 team competed in the gold medal match of the volleyball nationals. Last year, it was a huge moment for the team, which went on to win the U15 girls silver medal – the first national medal in RMVC’s history.
One year later, the U16 girls were back and looking at swapping medal colours.
“We were just happy to be in a championship game [last year] … This year, I thought we came in much more prepared and ready to go for it,” said U16 head coach, Chad Hollett.
Up against the Tornadoes, the local girls went to three sets (22-25; 25-22; 15-12) with the team from Brantford, Ontario.
Calling the local group a special and talented team, Hollett said the opportunities were there in the final, but a few things didn’t go their way.
“The thing that keeps us going is they fight for each other and we’re a very scrappy team,” said Hollett. “We don’t give up on any points, we’re right in every game … our fight and will to win is what keeps us in all of our games.”
