This was only fueled further when controversial rising star Carson Hocevar was congratulated by Hendrick Motorsports vice president of competition, Chad Knaus, following his second-place finish in Nashville.
However, should Elliott wind up replacing Larson, he wouldn’t have to go far for advice, with Supercar legend Shane van Gisbergen currently knee deep in his first full Cup Series season after making the move from Australia.
The 36-year-old three-time champion currently drives Trackhouse Racing’s No. 88 Chevrolet, and while he won his series debut in 2023, he has yet to return to victory lane.

The penalty report from NASCAR for the weekend at Chicago is out. No one was penalized as a result of infractions the governing body picked up.
The organization had made it clear it was looking into a few incidents on the track, but it apparently found no cause to issue penalties. Among those incidents was contact between Ross Chastain and Joey Logano.
Logano called on NASCAR to fine Chastain for the contact after Chastain reportedly admitted on pit road that he had intentionally wrecked Logano. The two got caught up in traffic in the middle of the race, with Chastain initially taking contact into a tire barrier.
Whatever the case, Chastain seemed to think Logano was at fault for that contact. He came after Logano and spun him in the next section of the track.
Reporters had a chance to catch up with Logano after that incident, and he was blunt. To him, there was no gray area surrounding the wreck and whether it was intentional from Chastain.
“Do I think so? Yes, he admitted he wrecked me on purpose,” Logano told FOX Sports’ Bob Pockrass. “He admitted it. Which means he should get fined if he admittedly wrecked someone on purpose. That’s not OK.”
Logano has had more than one run-in with Chastain this NASCAR Cup Series season. That’s part of the reason he was so heated after the race.
“Typical Ross,” Logano said. “He just sees red and does dumb stuff. That’s all. That’s twice this year on road courses at the end of these things I’ve been cost by Ross. I’m just over it.”
Other incidents on the track included some back-and-forth contact between Bubba Wallace and Alex Bowman. Wallace was attempting to fend off a pass by Bowman, who had fresher tires late in the race.
After making contact through several turns, eventually Bowman got the better of Wallace and turned the fellow NASCAR driver, taking him out of the race. There were no fireworks after the race, though, as the two met very briefly on pit road before Wallace headed out for the day.
And now we know NASCAR has issued no penalties as a result of the weekend at Chicago. So it’s on to Sonoma.

TV viewer numbers for this past weekend’s major motorsports TV broadcasts. Formula 1 raced at Silverstone, NASCAR in Chicago, and IndyCar at Mid-Ohio.
Formula 1
ESPN2’s live telecast of the Formula 1 British Grand Prix on Sunday, July 6, averaged 1.5 million TV viewers, up 19% over last year’s race and the largest audience ever for the event on U.S. television, per Nielsen. The audience peaked at 1.8 million TV Viewers between 11:30-11:45 a.m. ET as Lando Norris closed out a popular first home country win.
11 of 12 races held so far this season have had year-over-year viewership growth and seven of the 12 have set event viewership records.
The British Grand Prix audience was up from last year’s viewership of 1.3 million, which at the time was the largest ever for the race. The race also averaged 629,000 TV viewers (48%) in the Persons ages 18-49 demographic, dwarfing NASCAR and IndyCar, which are always under 20%.
Of the 12 F1 races held so far this season, all but one (Miami) have seen year-over-year viewership increases and seven of the 12 (Australia, China, Monaco, Spain, Canada, Austria and Britain) scored event record audiences. The audience for the Monaco Grand Prix was the third-largest live audience ever for a Formula 1 race on U.S. television.
Across ESPN, ESPN2 and ABC, F1 races are averaging 1.3 million TV viewers, up seven percent over the season-to-date average for the 2024 season and up 17 percent over the full 2024 season average.
In the younger demographic of Persons ages 18-49, races are averaging 511,000 viewers, up 14 percent over the 2024 season to date average and up 24 percent over the full 2024 season average.
F1 now has a 2-week break before racing again at Spa on July 27 on ESPN.
NASCAR
TNT + TruTV got 2.1 million TV viewers for Sunday’s third edition of the NASCAR Cup race in Chicago, down 46% from 3.9 million TV viewers last year on NBC and down 54.3% from 4.6 million TV viewers in 2023 in the inaugural running on NBC network.
“Mayor Brandon Johnson’s administration is open to two more years of the NASCAR Chicago Street Race, but only after exploring the possibility of shifting the marquee event to a different date that does not pose the ‘challenges that July 4th weekend presents.’”
IndyCar
The 2025 IndyCar race at Mid-Ohio, the Honda Indy 200, averaged a total audience of 1.29 million viewers on FOX, down 1.53% from 1.31 million TV viewers on NBC in 2024. This year’s figure includes both traditional TV and digital streaming viewership.

The ratings from the weekend at Chicago are in for NASCAR. And unfortunately they’ve ticked down quite a bit from the last two years.
Adam Stern of the Sports Business Journal reported that TNT and TruTV got 2.1 million viewers for Sunday’s edition of the Chicago street race. That figure notably does not include streaming.
How does that stack up to previous years? Well, last year the race was on NBC’s linear channel on network television and delivered 3.9 million viewers. And even that was down from the prior year on NBC, the inaugural running of the Chicago street race, which drew 4.6 million viewers.
It’s a significant decline and one that could force NASCAR to do some long, hard thinking about the future of the race in Chicago. Those discussions were already ongoing, with this year being the third and final year of the contract.
Regardless, the three races at Chicago have provided plenty of drama. Shane van Gisbergen claimed Sunday’s win with relative ease, but there were plenty of other dramatic incidents on the track.
Joey Logano calls out Ross Chastain
One of the most high-profile incidents in the race on Sunday at Chicago involved beef between Joey Logano and Ross Chastain. The two got into it on the track, then tempers flared and things spilled over into a heated confrontation after the race.

Chicago mayor signals openness to NASCAR’s return, but maybe not on July 4th weekend

CHICAGO – Mayor Brandon Johnson signaled openness to having the NASCAR Chicago Street Race return to the city’s downtown next year, but perhaps not on the Fourth of July weekend.
While the city touts the two-day event of racing as a boon to the local economy by bringing thousands of spectators to the area around Grant Park, it also causes headaches for locals.
Local perspective:
Weeks of street closures have been a frustration since the first downtown race in 2023, although organizers have reduced the preparation time from 43 days in the first year to just 25 days this year.
But Johnson appeared to question on Tuesday whether holding the race on the Fourth of July weekend was the most optimal time slot.
“The Fourth of July is already, quite frankly, it’s a heavier burden for our law enforcement because of so much activity that happens in Chicago and as tourism continues to increase and more and more people continue to visit our city, the expectation of law enforcement and our first responders continue to grow,” Johnson said.

CHICAGO, ILLINOIS – JULY 07: Kyle Larson, driver of the #5 Valvoline Chevrolet, and Ty Gibbs, driver of the #54 Monster Energy Toyota, lead the field on a pace lap prior to the NASCAR Cup Series Grant Park 165 at Chicago Street Course on July 07, 202
City Council members representing the downtown area have expressed similar concerns.
“They have also brought noise, disruption, and road closures, some of which will continue from this year’s event for many days to come,” wrote Ald. Brian Hopkins (2nd Ward) in a newsletter to constituents. “This past year alone, I heard from numerous 2nd Ward residents whose commutes and daily lives are altered drastically by these closures, a matter I take very seriously. Given the multiple other downtown large-scale events whose economic impacts are as much or greater than this event’s, with less disruption, I still have concerns.”
RELATED: Future of NASCAR’s downtown Chicago weekend is unclear going into the third year of contract
Under former Mayor Lori Lightfoot, the city entered into a three-year agreement with NASCAR to host the race, with an option for a two-year extension.
What’s next:
Five downtown aldermen, including Hopkins, sent a letter to Julie Giese, the president of NASCAR Chicago Street Race, requesting a meeting to “discuss the event’s future in Chicago.”
In a statement, NASCAR said that they’ve “had good conversations with the city and following another tremendously successful event that helped support Chicago’s economy by driving tourism from 35 countries.”
