With only seven races remaining to set the 12-driver NASCAR Xfinity Series Playoff field, Saturday’s BetRivers 200 (4:30 p.m. ET on CW, PRN, SiriusXM NASCAR Radio) at Dover Motor Speedway could play a big role in the championship outlook

Four teams are represented among the top-five drivers in the championship standings with reigning series champion, JR Motorsports’ Justin Allgaier holding a 59-point advantage over Haas Factory Team driver Sam Mayer atop the current rankings. Allgaier (2018 and 2020) joins two-time defending race winner Ryan Truex as the only multi-time race winners at the Dover mile.

But Mayer, who boasts an impressive 11 top-10 and eight top-five finishes through the first 19 races – his 15 top-15 showings is a season best – is hoping Dover’s Monster Mile will be where he celebrates his first victory of the season. The 21-year-old Mayer was third in last year’s race and is a perfect three-for-three in top-10 finishes there.

A victory for the Ford driver Mayer Saturday afternoon would halt a record 11-race winning streak for Chevrolet this season. The bowtie has won 17 of 19 races.

It’s Joe Gibbs Racing, however, boasts the most wins at Dover – 15 – its lineup of Xfinity Series championship hopefuls includes a pair of talented rookies in William Sawalich and Taylor Gray and along with veteran Brandon Jones and this week, former NASCAR Cup Series star Aric Almirola in the No. 19 JGR Toyota.

The three fulltime drivers have all turned in standout summers with the rookie Sawalich coming off a career best third-place showing on the Sonoma, Calif. road course last week. Jones just scored his best two stage efforts on the season at Sonoma. Gray arrives fresh off his 11th top-10 finish of the season in California and is a former ARCA Menards Series winner at Dover – leading 116 of 125 laps to win from pole position in 2022.

Interestingly, it’s cousins Jeb and Harrison Burton, who are straddling the Playoff line. Jeb Burton, driver of the No. 27 Jordan Anderson Racing Chevrolet holds a 16-point advantage over Harrison Burton, driver of the No. 25 AM Racing Ford for that 12th and final Playoff position.

Jeb Burton has finished 13th or better in five of his seven Dover starts with a best finish of seventh in 2020. Harrison Burton has similar encouraging statistics with three top-10s in four starts and a top effort of fifth place – also in 2020.

The entire series, however, must find a way to best the mighty JR Motorsports team, which has won 10 races this season with six different drivers. It is coming off a phenomenal showing at Sonoma (Calif.) Raceway where five drivers finished among the top-10 and 18-year-old phenom Connor Zilisch claimed his third win of the season.

Zilisch now ties his teammate Allgaier, and Richard Childress Racing’s Austin Hill for most wins on the season. They are the only competitors with multiple trophies.

NASCAR Cup Series regular Ross Chastain will steer the No. 9 JR Motorsports Chevrolet this weekend and two-time defending Dover race winner Truex will drive the No. 24 Toyota for Sam Hunt Racing. NASCAR CRAFTSMAN Truck Series standout Rajah Caruth is hoping to make his first Xfinity Series start of the season. He’s entered in the Jordan Anderson Racing No. 32 Chevrolet. In addition, ARCA Menards Series rising star Lavar Scott will also be attempting to make his Xfinity Series career debut this weekend in the No. 45 Alpha Prime Racing Chevrolet.

Practice is at 11 a.m. Saturday followed immediately by Kennametal Pole Qualifying at 12:05 p.m. – both sessions available on the CW App. Brandon Jones is the defending Xfinity pole-winner.

● Junior Journey: AM Racing will embark on its junior year journey in the NASCAR Xfinity Series in 2025 with driver Harrison Burton for the entire 33-race tour, continuing with Saturday afternoon’s running of the BetRivers 200 at Dover (Del.) Motor Speedway.

● Future Focused: In September 2024, AM Racing announced that NASCAR Cup Series winner Harrison Burton would join the family-owned operation to pilot the team’s No. 25 Ford Mustang, beginning with the 2025 NASCAR Xfinity Series season-opener from Daytona (Fla.) ● Critical Summer Stretch: Dover Motor Speedway continues a pivotal nine-week stretch that will help shape the NASCAR Xfinity Series Playoff picture ahead of the postseason opener at Bristol Motor Speedway in September.

The series is set to tackle a diverse slate of tracks in the coming weeks, each bringing its own unique demands. It all continues this weekend with a stop at one of the most intimidating high-banked tracks on the circuit, Dover Motor Speedway.

Next weekend, the series heads to the iconic yard of bricks at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, followed by a Midwest stop at Iowa Speedway, before wrapping up the stretch on August 9 at Watkins Glen International — a renowned road course in the Finger Lakes region of New York.

● Harrison Burton NASCAR Xfinity Series Dover Motor Speedway Stats: Saturday afternoon’s BetRivers 200 will mark Harrison Burton’s fifth NASCAR Xfinity Series start at the 1.0-mile concrete oval.

In four previous NASCAR Xfinity Series starts at Dover Motor Speedway, Harrison Burton has notched one top-five and two top-10 finishes, highlighted by a track-best fifth-place effort in the 2020 Drydene 200 while driving for Joe Gibbs Racing.

He enters the weekend with an average Xfinity finish of 15.0 at the “Monster Mile.”

Burton also brings added experience from three NASCAR Cup Series appearances at Dover, all of which were with Wood Brothers Racing. His best Cup result came in the 2023 Wurth 400, where he advanced from a 31st-place starting spot to finish 20th.

In addition, Burton has made three starts at Dover in the NASCAR CRAFTSMAN Truck Series, earning a Truck Series track-best finish of third in 2019 after starting ninth for Kyle Busch Motorsports.

● Harrison Burton NASCAR Xfinity Series Career Stats: Entering Dover, Burton has 94 career NASCAR Xfinity Series starts to his credit with four wins, 27 top-five and 55 top-10 finishes, and a championship-best result of eighth, twice in 2020 and 2021, respectively.

Burton’s four wins in the NASCAR Xfinity Series occurred during the 2020 season. Burton, the son of former NASCAR driver and current television analyst Jeff Burton, captured the checkered flag at Auto Club (Calif.) Speedway, Homestead-Miami (Fla.) Speedway, Texas Motor Speedway and Martinsville (Va.) Speedway, respectively.

Burton maintains a solid Xfinity Series average finishing position of 12.5 in four years of competition.

In addition to the 94 Xfinity Series starts, he has achieved 109 NASCAR Cup Series starts, 40 NASCAR CRAFTSMAN® Truck Series starts and 52 career starts across the ARCA Menards Series platforms.

● Sonoma Raceway | Pit Boss / FoodMaxx 250 Race Recap: The NASCAR Xfinity Series made the cross-country trek to Northern California for a date with the twists and turns of Sonoma Raceway — with AM Racing eying their eighth top-10 finish of the season.

Spending most of practice in race trim, Harrison Burton posted the 13th-fastest lap overall, giving the No. 25 team confidence heading into qualifying. However, Burton couldn’t crack the top 10 and settled for a 19th-place starting spot—his 12th top-20 qualifying effort of the season.

At the drop of the green flag, Burton began working his way toward the top-10. Despite battling grip issues, he stayed focused and consistent, logging competitive laps while managing the car’s handling. A well-timed strategy call at the end of Stage 2 vaulted him into the top-10.

As he fought to defend his track position and maximize Xfinity Series points, Burton was spun by another competitor late in Stage 3.

The incident dropped him outside the top 20, relegating him to 26th. With no caution to regroup the field, Burton made the most of the final laps and rallied to a 21st-place finish.

On Dover Motor Speedway: “I enjoy competing at Dover Motor Speedway. It’s a fast track, but things happen in a hurry, and it’s a place where rhythm and handling are super important.

On Keys to Success at Dover Motor Speedway: “Track position is super important at Dover Motor Speedway. The laps go by in a hurry, and the closer you are to the front, the better your chances are of staying out of trouble and delivering a satisfying finish.

On Battle for Playoff Cutline: “The Xfinity Series cutoff position is incredibly tight right now. Honestly, it would be even tighter if we hadn’t gotten spun late at Sonoma — that one stung. But we can’t dwell on it. We’ve got to reset, refocus and be ready for battle every single week.

“Over the next month and a half, we need to start stacking up stage points and avoid any unnecessary setbacks. Consistency is going to be key.

“Of course, if we can get this AM Racing team to Victory Lane, that changes everything. It takes the pressure off and gives us a chance to regroup and really focus on chasing a championship.”

On Sonoma Raceway Finish: “Like I said, the finish at Sonoma stung. What made it even tougher to swallow was getting spun by a driver who doesn’t race full-time. I’m not saying it was entirely his fault, but we definitely paid the price with how things turned out.

“I was really hoping we’d get a caution to regroup and charge back toward the top-10, but that break never came. We had to dig deep and fight hard to salvage a 21st-place finish.”

On 2025 Season Outlook: “I still genuinely believe we can continue to turn some heads in 2025. Now that we’re past the halfway point, our goals haven’t changed, they’re still within reach.

“This AM Racing team has what it takes to fight our way above the Playoff cutline and stay there.

Race Information:

The BetRivers 200 (200 laps | 200 miles) is the 20th of thirty-three (33) NASCAR Xfinity Series races on the 2025 schedule. Two 25-minute group practice sessions will take place on Saturday, July 19, 2025, from 11:00 a.m. to 11:55 a.m. Qualifying will immediately follow, launching at 12:05 p.m. The 38-car field will take the green flag shortly after 4:30 p.m. ET, with live coverage on The CW Network, the Performance Racing Network (Radio) and SiriusXM NASCAR Channel 90. Michael McDowell clapped back at Brad Keselowski after the latter posted his disdain for road courses.

The NASCAR Cup Series schedule recently featured a bevy of road courses, which saw star Shane Van Giisbergen dominate the field in historic fashion. That said, Keselowski, who has had less-than-desirable finishes this season on road courses, went to social media to express his frustration about how many road courses there are. 

It didn’t take long for McDowell, who has had two top-five finishes on road courses, to hit back at Keselowski’s comments. 

“Brad is one of those guys that when this Next Gen car came, the road course stuff was over for him,” McDowell said on a recent appearance on the ‘Door Bumper Clear’ podcast [h/t on3]. “When it comes to the crowds, if you ask the fans, the fans love road races. They love it.

“Sonoma doesn’t hold 100,000 people or have stands for 100,000 people. That place was packed, and it’s a good crowd, and put on a good show. …I mean, you can’t ask a guy that’s not very good at road courses if he thinks there should be more road courses. It’s like asking me if there should be more Dovers. There shouldn’t be more Dovers.”

The subject of road courses has been one that many around the sport have been commenting on in recent months. NASCAR legend Richard Petty slammed the inclusion of the road courses in the Cup Series and the current playoff system as it stands. 

Among those who believe there are too many road courses is Denny Hamlin, who mirrored Keselowki’s sentiments on a recent episode of his ‘Actions Detrimental’ podcast. “I’m not a road course fan. I still believe we have too many of them on the schedule,” he said on his show.

“The only reason people loved them was because we had green and white checkered finishes, because people would get wiped out, and it created this excitement. … I just think it was fake news, and we added a bunch to the schedule, we did cut back maybe one this year? But still six is a lot considering that we are NASCAR, we are short track racing, oval racing, full contact type racing.”

What’s Happening?

Late Wednesday afternoon, NASCAR filed its response to 23XI Racing and Front Row Motorsports’ motion for a temporary restraining order to maintain charter status. In this filing, NASCAR’s legal team answered several questions NASCAR fans had about the future of the teams’ six charters and both teams.

Following a Jun. 5 ruling that overturned a preliminary injunction granting the two teams charter status for 2025, the two teams, who own a combined six charters, motioned for a rehearing that would be denied on Jul. 9. Facing the loss of their charters for this weekend’s race, the two teams requested a temporary restraining order on Monday.

In their response, filed Wednesday afternoon, NASCAR’s legal team reiterated several points they have made throughout this process. They claimed that the teams never had these charters as they did not sign the 2025 NASCAR Charter Agreement last fall, and that there is no “credible risk” that drivers such as Tyler Reddick could leave should the teams lose charter status.

This potential loss of drivers and sponsors helped push the Dec. 18 injunction ruling that granted the teams their charters across the finish line. During the litigation of the team’s initial Preliminary Injunction Motion, their lawyer, Jeffery Kessler, claimed on Nov. 4 that Reddick had an out in his contract should the team lose charter status.

As of press time, the future of 23XI and FRM’s Charter status is in the air, though this filing clarifies that the teams have filed the paperwork to compete as open entries. If they do enter this weekend as unchartered teams, they will lose the larger share of revenue given to charter-owning entries and automatic entry to races.

Charter Sales and IndyCar Team Interest

On Monday, the teams claimed that NASCAR was already attempting to sell the six charters to other entities. In this filing, NASCAR claims that it will not do so until the court rules on the teams’ latest motion for preliminary injunction. Perhaps most interesting of all, the filing claims that there are teams, some already in NASCAR and some not currently involved in the sport, interested in buying charters.

“Although based on the false premise that Plaintiffs have Charters, and notwithstanding the substantial interest in Charters from motorsports companies racing in INDYCAR, Xfinity, and other series, NASCAR has represented it will not sell any Charters before the Court can rule on Plaintiffs’ motion for preliminary injunction.”

After reading such a quote, the first question likely on the minds of NASCAR fans is who. On the NASCAR Cup Series side, there are teams publicly seeking new charters, such as Legacy Motor Club and Rick Ware Racing, which are tied up in a legal battle themselves.

Some could assume that Dale Earnhardt Jr.’s JR Motorsports could be one of the Xfinity Series teams. But most interesting of all is the claim that an IndyCar team is interested in the charter. Notably, this comes just one week after RACER reported that Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing was interested in racing in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series.

The Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca in Monterey, California, will celebrate the 75th anniversary of Formula 1. The event, which will be hosted Aug. 13-16, will see some of the most iconic cars in F1 history race again and feature a stunning exhibition of rarely seen cars, event organizers stated in a press release.

Twenty-five authentic F1 cars from the 1966-85 non-turbo era will race daily in the Mario Andretti Trophy race. These include the 12-cylinder-powered cars from the likes of Tyrrell, Williams, Ferrari, Lotus and Brabham.

Historic F1 Cars From Private Collections & Museums

There will also be an exhibition of more than 30 rarely seen historic F1 cars from museums and private collections. This exhibit marks the first time many of these cars have been displayed together in one place, noted the release. The collection will feature models ranging from the 1956 Maserati 250F, 1966 Eagle Mk1 and 1986 Benetton B186 to more modern machinery like the 2024 Formula 1 World Constructors’ Championship-winning McLaren MCL38, driven by Lando Norris.
