Why thousands of NCAA athletes might wait over a year for share of $2.8 billion settlement

The attorney who negotiated the $2.8 billion legal settlement for the NCAA said Friday that thousands of former athletes due to receive damages could have to wait months or maybe more than a year to get paid while appeals play out.

Rakesh Kilaru, who served as the NCAA’s lead counsel for the House settlement that was approved last week, told The Associated Press an appeal on Title IX grounds filed this week will hold up payments due to around 390,000 athletes who signed on to the class-action settlement.

He said he has seen appeals take up to 18 months in the California-based federal court where this case is playing out, though that isn’t necessarily what he expects.

“I will say that we, and I’m sure the plaintiffs, are going to push,” Kilaru said.

A schedule filed this week calls for briefs related to the appeal to be filed by Oct. 3. Kilaru doesn’t expect anyone on the defendant or plaintiff side to file for extensions in the case “because every day the appeal goes on is a day damages don’t go to the student-athletes.”

He said while the appeal is ongoing, the NCAA will pay the money into a fund that will be ready to go when needed.

The other critical parts of the settlement — the part that allows each school to share up to $20.5 million in revenue with current players and set up an enforcement arm to regulate it — are in effect regardless of appeals.

“I think everyone thought it was important and good for this new structure to start working because it does have a lot of benefits for students,” Kilaru said. “But it’s very common for damages to be delayed in this way for the simple reason that you don’t want to make payments to people that you can’t recover” if the appeal is successful.

A group of eight female athletes filed the appeal. Their attorney, Ashlyn Hare, said they supported settlement of the case “but not an inaccurate one that violates federal law.”

“The calculation of past damages is based on an error that ignores Title IX and deprives female athletes of $1.1 billion,” Hare said.

Kilaru agreed with plaintiff attorneys who have argued that Title IX violations are outside the scope of the lawsuit.

Other objections to the settlement came from athletes who said they were damaged by roster limits set by the terms. One attorney representing a group of those objectors, Steven Molo, said they were reviewing Wilken’s decision and exploring options.

Caitlin Clark is confirmed to finally return from injury in the Indiana Fever’s Wednesday contest against the Golden State Valkyries. In preparation for her return, the phenom point guard was spotted showcasing her quarterback skills.

During the Fever’s practice on Tuesday, the 23-year-old guard was tossing around a football with a kid, possibly the son of a coach, per Andrew Chernoff of WISH TV. You can see her put the ball right on the money as Caitlin Clark casually plays catch.

The 2024 WNBA Rookie of the Year certainly turned heads with her pass, as numerous fans jumped on social media to share their reactions to Caitlin Clark throwing a football. Some claimed they were impressed, while others made jokes about which NFL players she might be better than.

“Caitlin can play anything and dominate,” said one individual.

Another user claimed, “Daniel Jones needs to pay attention.”

“Los Angeles Olympics dual gold medalist? Point guard for the basketball team and QB of the flag football team? Just saying,” admitted one fan.

One person explained, “There’s a lot of good basketball players, but there aren’t a lot of true athletes. She’s an athlete. Golf, soccer, passing, I’d imagine any sport, she could excel at.”

“Could be QB1 in Indy. Give me CC over Anthony Richardson,” said another fan.

Caitlin Clark’s return from injury will be her first appearance after missing five games. The last time she took the court was in Indiana’s 94-86 win over the Seattle Storm on June 24. Injuries have been the tale this season, as Clark has missed 10 games so far.

Despite that, the former No. 1 pick has been brilliant more often than not when she is available. In the nine games she’s played so far this season, Caitlin Clark is averaging 18.2 points, 5.0 rebounds, and 8.9 assists per game. She also owns a 39.0% field goal percentage and is shooting 29.5% from beyond the three-point line.

Oklahoma will be looking for a new athletic director for the first time in nearly three decades.

OU athletic director Joe Castiglione is set to retire after 28 years at the helm of Sooner sports. Castiglione will stay on for the calendar year as the Sooners begin a search for his replacement. Castiglione will assist in the search and will stay on as athletic director emeritus after the hire is made, per ESPN’s Pete Thamel.

The Sooners will hold a press conference at 9 a.m. Tuesday to announce Castiglione’s retirement. The press conference will be attended by Castiglione, OU president Joseph Harroz Jr. and OU board of regents chair Anita Holloway.

The announcement represents the end of one of the most significant era in Oklahoma athletics history.

Castiglione, 67, was hired as the program’s athletic director in the summer of 1998. Since then, he has overseen 26 national championships — including the football program’s 2000 championship — and 117 league titles. He also played a significant role in the Sooners’ transition from the Big 12 to the SEC, and the Sooners’ recent hire of Jim Nagy as the new football general manager.

Per Thamel, Castiglione approached the administration around a month ago about his plans to retire. He is currently the longest-tenured athletic director in college sports.

Castiglione’s retirement comes at an incredibly pivotal time for Oklahoma. The Sooners’ football program heads into Brent Venables’ fourth season with the program and facing a ton of pressure after two losing seasons in three years. The Sooners also opted into revenue sharing with its athletes as part of the House v. NCAA settlement.

Harroz is tasked with finding a replacement who will mitigate uncharted territory for collegiate athletics, as well as maintain OU’s competitiveness in the SEC. Most of all, that replacement will have huge shoes to fill.

British Wimbledon reporter goes viral for NFL error during TV interview with Ben Shelton

  • READ MORE: Trinity Rodman stuns in blue dress as she returns to Wimbledon

Famous British television presenter Annabel Croft has gone viral during her role of the on-court interviewer during Wimbledon, with a ‘beyond embarrassing’ NFL error while speaking with American tennis sensation Ben Shelton.

Croft wanted to dive into the athletic background of the No 10-ranked Shelton moments after he secured his first Wimbledon quarterfinals appearance on Monday.

What was lost in translation between what those in the United Kingdom and the United States refer to as football led to the error.

‘I was reading that, in college, you loved your American football and you were a quarterbacker. What are the comparisons? I hope I’ve got this right. What are the comparisons between tennis and American football?’ Croft said.

‘I’m not sure many people in the crowd know what that is,’ Shelton said, drawing a laugh from the All England Club crowd. ‘They use that brown, oval-shaped ball. Sometimes they kick it between the uprights. But yeah, I grew up playing quarterback or quarterbacker, either way.’

Before continuing with his response, Shelton broke out into laughter, with Croft needing to drop her microphone as the household name had a massive grin on her face.

‘Probably the only thing that’s a direct correlation with tennis is the serve, as you guys can probably see. And so, yeah, that’s kind of the one thing that I took from football onto the tennis court. Obviously, I’ve always loved athletics, playing a team sport, something bigger than yourself.’

‘Now, I’m obviously playing an individual sport, but I still have a team supporting me that I work with every day. So that’s the most important thing to me. I don’t want to be out here by myself. I want to be doing it with people that I love, and I got a lot of people that I love over there.’

The damage was done for some NFL fans, even if Shelton played it cool with the mistake.

‘A sports presenter used the term Quarterbacker, beyond embarrassing,’ one person on X said.

As Shelton said the part about people he loves in the crowd, the cameras panned to his girlfriend, American soccer star Trinity Rodman, who looked touched by her boyfriend’s words.

The NFL has had more exposure in recent years, with the NFL playing consistent regular games in London since 2007, minus the pandemic-stricken year of 2020.

Shelton will face world No 1 Jannik Sinner in his first Wimbledon quarterfinal on Wednesday morning.

Sinner advanced past the fourth round due to his opponent, Grigor Dimitrov, retiring with a pectoral injury after besting the world’s top player in the first two sets.

Wydad to offload 21 senior players before beginning of new season

  • The Moroccan giants Wydad Athletic Club are reportedly preparing for a major squad overhaul following a disappointing 2023/24 season
  • After replacing Rulani Mokwena, the new coach is streamlining the squad to fit his vision for the upcoming campaign
  • Following a standout FIFA Club World Cup performance, Thembinkosi Lorch is set to join Wydad permanently from Sundowns

Botola Pro side Wydad Athletic Club are reportedly poised to let go of 21 senior players as part of efforts to scale down their squad ahead of the new season.

New coach ushers in big changes

The club, which recently parted ways with former Mamelodi Sundowns coach Rulani Mokwena, has appointed Mohamed Amine Benhachem as the new head coach. Benhachem has reportedly identified the players he wants to work with, as well as those who will be offloaded.

This development follows a disappointing end to last season, which saw Wydad finish third in the league and suffer elimination in the group stages of the FIFA Club World Cup.

Notable departures

According to reports from Morocco, the list of departing players includes:

Goalkeeper: Youssef El Moutie

Defenders: Aymane Dairani, Abdelmounaim Boutouil, Jamal Harkass, Nabil Marmouk, and Fahd Moufi

Midfielders and Forwards: Ismail Moutaraji, Pedrinho, Arthur Wenderroscky, Mehdi Moubarik, Stéphane Aziz Ki, Saifeddine Bouhra, and Walid Nassi

Fringe Players and Youth: Ayoub Marsa, Rayhi, Ghilane, and Obang

Lorch set for permanent move to Wydad

Meanwhile, Wydad have reportedly decided to sign Mamelodi Sundowns winger Thembinkosi Lorch on a permanent deal following his stellar performances at the FIFA Club World Cup. The winger, who scored against Juventus during the tournament, is expected to cost around R20 million.

An official announcement from both clubs is expected once Lorch completes his medicals.

Resurgence after slow start at Sundowns

The former Orlando Pirates star joined Mamelodi Sundowns but struggled for game time. He was later loaned out to Wydad by then-coach Mokwena six months ago. Since then, Lorch’s stock has risen significantly due to his impressive displays on the global stage.

Football salary: How much does Thembinkosi Lorch earn?

Lorch’s move from Orlando Pirates to Mamelodi Sundowns in 2024 saw his monthly earnings skyrocket to a reported R450,000, according to multiple sources. This marked a sharp rise from his previous salary bracket of R130,000–R165,000 while at Pirates.

A court case in 2023 revealed he was earning around R50,000 net due to child support deductions, but that figure no longer reflects his current standing in the Premier Soccer League (PSL).

Although his salary at Wydad Athletic Club remains undisclosed, his high-profile loan spell suggests he is earning at a comparable rate in Morocco.

Chiefs legend slams Wydad fans over Mokwena abuse.

Briefly News also reported that a Kaizer Chiefs legend criticised Wydad fans over the way they treated South African coach Rulani Mokwena.

The former Bafana Bafana star showed his support for the ex-Sundowns mentor and explained some of the challenge the South African tactician has encountered while coaching in Morocco.

Jordan Spieth reacts after seeing LeBron James' golf swing and tells him how to gain 30 ...

LeBron James is seemingly the latest athlete to start playing golf after posting a video of his swing on social media recently.

Of course, like everything he does in his professional and personal life, the video of James went viral, and golf fans worldwide commented on his technique.

While it was probably wise to ignore most of the replies, LeBron just received some advice that he should definitely take on board from three-time major champion Jordan Spieth.

Spieth thinks the Los Angeles Lakers superstar could add 30 yards of distance to his shots with one simple fix.

Jordan Spieth reviews LeBron James’ golf swing and shares key advice

Spieth first explained to TV personality Kay Adams that James’ golf swing is “pretty solid” considering he has only just started playing.

“It’s pretty solid,” he said. “A lot of times, other athletes go to golf and they start swinging super long, and their arms go everywhere.

“It is compact. There is some potential to obviously get a lot more power into it, but he’s off to a good start there!”

He added that LeBron’s apparent newfound interest in golf can only be a good thing, as it will bring eyeballs to the game.

“Any time you get these stud athletes that want to get into the game… I don’t know if he wants to get into the game or just lost a bet. I don’t know why he was out there playing, because I don’t think he had golfed very often. But if that is what he wants to do, and post golf, that is going to be good for us.”

Spieth then shared some simple advice to help LeBron hit the ball further. He suggested a longer backswing with more wrist action to generate power.

“He could use his wrists more,” Spieth continued. “It’s kind of an arm swing, so he could just get a lot more power if he let that club flow and used his wrists a little bit.

“As he goes back, the club only gets to what looks like a half swing, so if he gets a bit more of a turn and throws his wrists into it, he could gain 30 yards in 30 minutes, which is kind of cool for… if he cares, whoever gets to coach him on that. He is going to be pretty excited about that.”

Jordan Spieth compares PGA Tour player to Kevin Durant

On the subject of basketball and golf, Adams asked Spieth to name the PGA Tour player most similar to Kevin Durant.

Durant is an all-time great in the NBA, whose standout attribute is making the game look easy. So, Spieth compared him to Scottie Scheffler.

“Recently, it’s been Scottie Scheffler,” he replied. “You’re talking about the person who is going to step up and throw 25 and eight and six on you every night.

“So Scottie has been the best, with historic-type ball striking in the last three or four years. That would make the game about as easy as it gets, which I think is how Durant can make it look when he’s on.

“Durant has been that way since he was in college, and it’s crazy. He had some gruesome injuries, still came back and was the same guy, and now he gets to go and get a little fire lit under him with some young talent and some pressure to go perform.

“Scottie is a little younger, he has a bigger runway, but obviously, to be a Kevin Durant-type player over your career in golf, you have to keep doing it for a long time. But Scottie is the best comparison lately for sure.”
