Funeral arrangements have been finalized for Charlie Henderson, a prominent NASCAR team owner and Southwest Virginia businessman, who passed away on Saturday at the age of 88.

Henderson, who served as a military police officer in the Army, returned home to establish the grocery chain Food Country U.S.A. He later founded Henderson Motorsports in 1982.

Visitation for Henderson will be held on Friday from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Southwest Virginia Higher Education Center in Abingdon. He will be laid to rest with full military honors on Saturday.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Abingdon United Methodist Church or the VFW Post 1994 in Henderson’s honor.

On August 15 (local time) at “The Quail, A Motorsports Gathering” Chevrolet announced the Corvette CX.R Vision Gran Turismo Concept, a racecar concept that pays homage to the role motorsports has played in Corvette’s nearly 75 year history, and hints at what future Corvette track vehicles may look like. The CX.R Vision Gran Turismo Concept debuted alongside the Corvette CX Concept. These two vehicles will inspire Corvette design language for years to come.

Corvette CX.R Vision Gran Turismo Concept

The Corvette CX.R Vision Gran Turismo Concept is a model made exclusively for the track.

The aerodynamics of this car started with the CX design and amped up the aggression, with more prominent active aerofeatures and a lower ride height for downforce and grip. CX.R employs light-weight materials, including carbon fiber, to keep total mass as low as possible.

It is powered by a hybrid system utilizing 2 electric motors up front and one motor in the rear, combined with compact a high revving V8 twin turbocharged engine (using E Fuel). This unit ensures driving performance and range required in endurance racing, plus incorporates a thrilling sound.

The interior is also specialized for circuit use, with the seat shaped to support the driver’s head and neck when exposed to strong horizontal G’s in the corners. The steering wheel has strategically placed physical buttons and knobs so that they can be used intuitively even while wearing racing gloves.

And of course the yellow and black coloring of the Corvette CX.R Vision Gran Turismo Concept carries the tradition of Corvettes in GT car racing in the last 25 years.

Corvette CX Concept

The Corvette CX Concept hypercar will inspire future design language for Corvette.

Designed so that it can be enjoyed on the streets as well as on the track, it is both futuristic and recognizable as pure Corvette.

The CX has key Corvette design elements- a forward-lunging nose, a pronounced horizontal “chine” line delineating the upper and lower bodywork, and the dual-element tail lights. The proportions are long, low, and sleek, with a roofline less than 41 inches high.

On the engineering side, its aerodynamics and power unit are its key features. The car is equipped with an active aerodynamics system which balances efficiency on public roads as well as high performance on the track, but the real highlight is the fan downforce system. Utilizing technology of the near future, jet-aircraft-like thrust vectoring control maintains the front and rear aerodynamic balance.

The drivetrain is four wheel drive, incorporating the RESS system which integrates the power unit into the drive system, producing over 2000hp in total from 4 electric motors.

The Corvette CX.R Vision Gran Turismo Concept and the Corvette CX Concept are both planned for inclusion in Gran Turismo 7.

Vision Gran Turismo is a project in which the world’s leading automotive brands design new sports cars for Gran Turismo players. For more information on Vision Gran Turismo, please visit the “Vision Gran Turismo” page on the official website.

NASCAR Cup team out at Richmond after worst finish of 2025

Katherine Legge has proven plenty of NASCAR fans wrong this year, specifically after her much-maligned Cup Series debut at Phoenix Raceway in March.

She recorded Live Fast Motorsports’ best-ever finish in a road or street course race on the streets of Chicago in 19th place, and she went on to produce the team’s best-ever finish in a non-drafting superspeedway race, a 17th place finish at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, despite having not gained any additional Cup Series oval experience between her disastrous Phoenix debut and that race.

However, things did not go her way at Watkins Glen International, where she initially ran well before ultimately having to settle for 36th place, her worst finish in six starts – and the team’s worst finish in nine starts – this year.

Live Fast Motorsports, Katherine Legge out at Richmond

Legge had initially planned on competing this weekend at Richmond Raceway, but when the Brickyard 400 was added to her schedule, that was changed, and the B.J. McLeod-owned team opted not to field the No. 78 Chevrolet in the Cook Out 400 at all this weekend.

In fact, none of the four part-time non-chartered (open) cars that ran at Watkins Glen are back at the four-turn, 0.75-mile (1.207-kilometer) Richmond, Virginia short track. The others include the No. 44 NY Racing Team Chevrolet, the No. 66 Garage 66 Ford, and the No. 87 Trackhouse Racing Chevrolet, which didn’t actually start the race at Watkins Glen following Connor Zilisch’s injury.

This weekend, the two part-time open cars on the entry list are the No. 33 Richard Childress Racing, which is set to be driven by Jesse Love, and the No. 67 23XI Racing Toyota, which is set to be driven by Corey Heim.

Despite being one of the popular picks to become the first non-Daytona 500 DNQ since 2018, it was Legge who memorably bumped Heim out of the Chicago race after Heim made a mistake in qualifying.

Saturday’s Cook Out 400 is set to be shown live on USA Network from Richmond Raceway beginning at 7:30 p.m. ET. Start a free trial of FuboTV today and be sure not to miss it!

After a win last week at Watkins Glen, Shane van Gisbergen joins Denny Hamlin as the only two drivers this season with four wins in the NASCAR Cup Series. However, van Gisbergen won’t see another road course (where he’s collected all his wins) until the Round of 12 in the 2025 NASCAR Playoffs and Hamlin will enter the 2025 Cook Out 400 on Saturday as a five-time winner at Richmond Raceway. Hamlin is the +400 favorite in the 2025 Cook Out 400 odds while van Gisbergen is a +25000 longshot. Hamlin’s teammate Christopher Bell is listed at +450 in the NASCAR at Richmond odds while current points leader William Byron is listed at +850.

The green flag will drop at 7:30 p.m. ET on Saturday night, and the race is scheduled for 400 laps around the D-shaped oval that measures three-quarters of a mile that first appeared on the NASCAR schedule in 1953. Before entering any 2025 Cook Out 400 picks, be sure to see the latest 2025 NASCAR at Richmond predictions from SportsLine’s proven projection model.

Developed by daily Fantasy pro and SportsLine predictive data engineer Mike McClure, this proprietary NASCAR prediction model simulates every race 10,000 times, taking into account factors such as track history and recent results.

McClure’s model began the 2025 season by calling Chase Elliott’s win in the Cook Out Clash at Bowman Gray for a +300 payout. Then it went on to predict Kyle Larson in Miami (+350), Christopher Bell’s NASCAR All-Star Race win (+600), Denny Hamlin’s win in Michigan (+650), Shane van Gisbergen’s win in Mexico City (+330), Elliott’s win in Atlanta (+1500) and van Gisbergen again in Chicago (+150), Sonoma (+125) and Watkins Glen (+135).

All told, the model has nailed nine winners this year and a whopping 27 winners since 2021. Anyone who followed its lead on betting apps and sportsbooks on those NASCAR picks could have seen huge returns. New users can also target the DraftKings promo code, which offers $200 in bonus bets instantly plus over $200 off NFL Sunday Ticket:

Now, the model simulated the 2025 Cook Out 400 10,000 times. Head to SportsLine to see the complete projected NASCAR at Richmond leaderboard.

Top 2025 Cook Out 400 predictions

For Saturday’s 2025 Cook Out 400, the model is high on Chase Briscoe, even though he’s listed for as high as +1600 in the latest 2025 NASCAR at Richmond odds odds. He’s a target for anyone looking for a huge payday.

After making the NASCAR playoffs in two of the last three seasons for Stewart Haas Racing, Briscoe signed with Joe Gibbs Racing this offseason and he’ll make the postseason once again after scoring a win at Pocono. He’s eighth in the NASCAR standings entering the week and has been particularly strong over the last two months.

In addition to his win on the Tricky Triangle, Briscoe was the runner-up at Sonoma, Dover and Iowa and recorded another top-five last week at Watkins Glen. Find the best price at DraftKings, but also be sure check out the latest bet365 bonus code to get $150 in bonus bets after placing a $5 bet.

The model has also revealed a shocking NASCAR prop for this weekend: Kyle Busch finishes top 10 for a +135 payout. He’s a potentially a strong value pick for your Richmond NASCAR prop bets at FanDuel.

Busch is 102 points behind bubble boy Chris Buescher with only two races remaining in the regular season, so he’ll need a win to earn his way back into the NASCAR playoffs. He is, however, a six-time winner at Richmond Raceway and it’s the track that he’s arguably been the most consistent on throughout his career.

The 40-year-old has recorded 28 top-10 finishes in 38 career Cup starts there and also has six victories and 20 top-10 finishes in 23 career NASCAR Xfinity Series starts there. See which other drivers to back and the rest of the projected NASCAR leaderboard at SportsLine and new users can check out the latest FanDuel promo code and get $150 in bonus bets instantly at Fanduel if your $5 bet wins:

How to make 2025 NASCAR at Richmond picks

The model is also targeting three other drivers with Richmond NASCAR odds of 16-1 or longer to make a serious run at the checkered flag. Anyone who backs these drivers could hit it big. You can see all of the model’s NASCAR picks, props, and projected leaderboard over at SportsLine.

Students and teachers from throughout the Illinois/Missouri region will have a unique opportunity to explore careers in the automotive industry at World Wide Technology (WWT) Raceway on Friday, Sept. 26, the morning of the NAPA Auto Parts NHRA Midwest Nationals.

The career exploration is hosted by the 2025 NHRA Youth & Education Services (YES) Program, a nationwide initiative designed to inspire students to explore rewarding careers in the automotive industry at no cost to participants. It is the only full-time education initiative in motorsports.

Attendees will learn about job openings, including the NAPA Auto Care Apprentice Program and scholarship opportunities, and build relationships with local NAPA Auto Care Centers. Every participant also receives a Friday NHRA race ticket at no cost.

The hands-on educational experience is scheduled for 9-11 a.m. and will include the following:

• A “Midway” where students and teachers can experience interactive displays and engage with representatives from YES and NAPA.

• YES Program overview and Panel Discussion featuring NAPA Funny Car Driver Ron Capps and others.

• Tour of Ron Capps Pit Area and Carlyle Tools Trailer to meet with local NAPA Auto Care Centers and learn about the Apprenticeship Program that opens the doors for students eager to become a certified technician.

• Carlyle Tools Demonstration where students can see the tools the pros use in action.

“We’re thrilled to welcome high school, trade school and vo-tech students to the YES event at WWT Raceway this year,” said Earl Flack, owner McKay Auto Parts, a 27-store NAPA ownership with locations throughout the area. “This program bridges the gap between education and industry, showing students the wide range of possibilities available in technical and STEM-related careers, especially in the motorsports and automotive sectors.”

Students interested in attending can sign up here.

It’s been a busy week, so we’re winding down with our favorite feel-good stories.

This week was full of star power, with one actor set to teach at UNC Greensboro and another looking to raise money for a local children’s camp. The annual Asheville Quilt Show also takes place this weekend after a year off due to Helene.

As usual, there’s even more good news to be found in our past editions of Good News Friday!

A star-studded semester at UNC Greensboro

It’s time for UNC Greensboro to roll out the red carpet this semester.

Actor David Furr joined the UNCG staff this semester as an Assistant Professor of Acting for the Camera. Furr has received multiple recognitions for his work, including a Tony and SAG Award nomination for portraying Dashiell Montgomery on HBO’s The Gilded Age. He has more than 25 years of professional experience from Broadway, television, film, voiceover work, and more.

Furr will utilize over 15 years of coaching and mentoring experience as he teaches courses on acting for camera and delivering monologues, among other techniques.

NASCAR driver and actor raises money for Victory Junction

In Randleman, NC, another actor is looking to inspire people in a different way.

Frankie Muniz, known for his role in “Malcom in the Middle” and his current work as a NASCAR driver, is hoping to raise $25,000 to send 10 kids to Victory Junction – a year-round camp for children with serious medical conditions. The camp was opened in 2004 after the death of racer Adam Petty, whose family started the program to fulfill his dream of enriching the lives of children with major ailments.

The camp offers ziplining, arts and crafts, and a racecar simulator among other activities that are free of charge to families. Currently, Muniz has raised around $5k, and donations can be made here.

Asheville Quilt Show

For those looking to cozy up as fall approaches, Asheville might have just the event for you.

This weekend, the Asheville Quilt Guild hosts the Quilt Show with over 300 quilts on display. The show also features over 25 vendors, quilts for sale, and live demonstrations by expert quilters. Guests can also see this year’s winners of the Quilt show, who collectively won $12,000 in prize money.

The event began this Thursday and goes until Aug. 16 at the WNC Agricultural Center – Davis Event Center. Tickets can be purchased at the door, with children under 12 admitted for free.
