BLACKSBURG – For the third consecutive year, Virginia Tech Basketball is joining forces with Carilion Children’s to combat pediatric cancer. The athletes and coaching staff from both the men’s and women’s teams will collaborate with patients from Carilion Pediatric Hematology-Oncology to creatively enhance awareness of pediatric cancer.

Over 25 children and teenagers participating will have the opportunity to customize shoes for the coaches and basketball personnel to wear later in the season. On Wednesday, Dec. 18, from noon to 2 p.m., players and coaches will co-design the footwear alongside the kids and their families at the Hahn Hurst Basketball Practice Center.

The women’s basketball staff and coaches will don these uniquely crafted sneakers during the Jan. 30 match against Notre Dame at Cassell Coliseum. Meanwhile, the men’s basketball staff and coaches will sport their sneakers on Jan. 25 when the Hokies welcome Clemson.

This initiative is part of the NCAA’s ongoing “Coaches vs. Cancer” campaign, which encourages collegiate basketball coaches and staff across the nation to wear sneakers at selected games to promote awareness for the cause.
