Johnson City, NY (WBNG) — On Thursday, Hartwick College revealed their plans to introduce two additional sports to their athletic framework.
The Hawks will be incorporating Men’s Volleyball and Women’s Flag Football into their collegiate athletics starting with the 2025-26 academic year.
At the high school level, boys volleyball has been recognized as a championship sport in New York since 2010, while girls flag football held its inaugural official championship this past spring.
Joshua Bigford, currently serving as the assistant coach for the Hawks Women’s Volleyball team and a former four-time All-American at St. John Fisher, will take the helm as head coach for the Men’s Volleyball team.
Starting in January 2025, a nationwide recruitment will commence for the Women’s Flag Football head coach position.
Hartwick College will now support a total of 21 varsity programs.
“This provides two additional opportunities for high school students throughout the country,” noted Hartwick’s Executive Director of Athletics, Paul Vecchio. “Especially in New York state, where we’re witnessing significant growth in boys volleyball and flag football. This adds to the appeal of Hartwick College and showcases all we have to offer.”
The NFL has initiated efforts to promote and expand women’s flag football nationwide, with 15 NCAA institutions currently offering women’s flag football at the varsity level.
