Charles “David” Labbo peacefully passed away at his home in Athens, Georgia, on November 20, 2024, at the age of 79, surrounded by his family after bravely fighting cancer.
Born in Newport, Rhode Island in 1945 to U.S. military parents, David often moved with his family among various bases, also residing in Japan, Puerto Rico, Montana, Ohio, Massachusetts, and Texas, where his parents settled down. He graduated from Sam Houston High School and Trinity University on an academic scholarship in San Antonio, Texas, where he wedded his beloved Linda K. Day. Together for 57 years, they moved to Athens, Georgia, in 1993.
Before embarking on a rewarding career as an elementary school teacher and later as a State Farm insurance agent, David competed in professional PGA golf tournaments for several years, possessing a PGA Tour Card and working as a golf pro at Pecan Valley Golf Club in San Antonio. A talented athlete, he received varsity letters in four sports during high school and continued to excel in athletics for many decades. He was a true renaissance man, delighting audiences with engaging and humorous performances for years as “Eight-Ball the Clown,” a mime, and a magician. Well-read and knowledgeable, he was also an adept fisherman and a passionate treasure hunter at flea markets and garage sales. He could make friends with anyone, leaving a legacy centered on assisting those in need and sharing his Christian faith, guiding many people to Christ during his lifetime.
David is survived by his beloved wife Linda; children Drew (and wife Becky) and Leigh (and husband Roger); grandchildren Nora, Griffin, Charlie, and Koen; sister Suzanne; and niece Jessa. He was preceded in death by his father, Charles Alvin Labbo; mother, Jean Barry Labbo; and treasured brother-in-law Randy Felker.
David cherished his friends and family and is profoundly missed. We find solace knowing he is at peace now, likely reeling in big trout from a divine fishing pond.
Funeral services will take place at 11:00 am at Watkinsville First Baptist Church in Georgia on January 31, 2025.
In place of flowers, donations in memory of David Labbo can be directed to Watkinsville First Baptist Church.
