The inaugural Jewish starting quarterback at Brigham Young University (BYU) has made history by securing a significant NIL sponsorship deal with a renowned Jewish food brand, achieving milestones both on the gridiron and beyond.
Jake Retzlaff, 21, a junior hailing from Pomona, California, has created a buzz at BYU, which has a predominantly Mormon student body with only a limited number of Jewish attendees.
As the first Jewish quarterback in BYU’s history, Retzlaff has propelled the team to a commendable 10-2 record and a position in the top-25 national rankings.
In an announcement that has turned heads nationally, Retzlaff has teamed up with Manischewitz, which marks the kosher food company’s inaugural venture into sports sponsorship, as reported by the Jewish Telegraph Agency.
Founded in 1888, Manischewitz is renowned for its matzo and kosher wines. “Manischewitz has been an integral part of my life,” Retzlaff expressed. “I grew up enjoying matzo with peanut butter as my go-to snack, and each Passover, my family and I would create matzo pizza together. During Chanukah, we would always whip up potato latkes as part of our tradition.”
The agreement entails special edition matzo boxes showcasing Retzlaff’s image and promoting Jewish customs. Manischewitz stated that the product will “honor the confluence of athletic excellence and cultural heritage.”
This sponsorship transcends the sports arena, having a profound impact especially at a time when Jewish communities are experiencing growing challenges.
