The top destinations in New England to explore during the Christmas season
Priscilla Casper from NBC10 Boston led the segment for a “Today” show series titled “Merriest Main Street,” marking her debut on the show, as she shared on Instagram.
“We enjoy highlighting towns bursting with holiday cheer,” remarked “Today” host Carson Daly. “We are starting off our journey today in Stockbridge, Massachusetts.”
Casper stood in front of the historic Red Lion Inn, surrounded by members of the local community.
“It’s like being part of a Hallmark movie,” Casper remarked. “The only element we’re lacking is the snow.”
She noted that the “enchanting, wonderful town” appears in Norman Rockwell’s iconic 1967 artwork “Stockbridge Main Street at Christmas (Home for Christmas).” The town will reenact the artwork on Sunday as part of its 35th annual Main Street at Christmas celebration.
According to Casper, Main Street in Stockbridge has become a symbol of Christmas in America.
“I believe this is because Rockwell resided and created his works here for the last quarter-century of his life,” shared Margit Hotchkiss, chief marketing officer of the Norman Rockwell Museum, with Casper. “He drew inspiration from this charming town, its quintessential small-town essence, and the beautiful structures we see behind us — the Red Lion Inn, the library, and the banks. It’s truly magical.”
Kate Maguire, CEO and artistic director of the Berkshire Theatre Group, described Stockbridge’s Main Street as “a winter wonderland.”
“This is the heart of the Berkshires: Stockbridge,” Maguire expressed to Casper.
“A Christmas Carol” premieres Friday evening at Berkshire Theatre Group’s Unicorn Theatre, Maguire shared, adding that there are numerous other festive attractions. She mentioned the nearby Winter Lights at Naumkeag and holiday tours at Chesterwood. And, obviously, the Norman Rockwell Museum, which she described as “majestic and wonderful.”
During the segment on the “Today” show, Santa and Mrs. Claus waved from a vintage red car positioned in front of the Red Lion Inn, adorned with a Christmas tree on the roof — a homage to Rockwell’s artwork. Casper conducted a local news segment from the car’s front seat prior to the airing of the “Today” show.
“Our gratitude to you and the entire NBC10 Boston team for your assistance,” Daly told Casper after the segment aired. “That was impressive. It was one of our finest moments.”
