Jake Retzlaff, the first Jewish quarterback in the history of Brigham Young University, has signed a name, image, and likeness agreement with the kosher food brand Manischewitz.
Earlier this week, Retzlaff announced the collaboration by featuring in a social media update from the brand’s official account. He was photographed donning a Manischewitz jersey and cap, discussing how his faith and traditional Jewish cuisine have influenced his life.
Retzlaff, popularly known as “BYJew,” will be featured on special edition packages of matzo and will have his story shared across the brand’s various social media channels, where he will connect with fans through his own traditional recipes and holiday practices.
Established in 1888, Manischewitz produces a variety of items such as matzo, macaroons, gefilte fish, and chicken soup.
“Manischewitz has been a part of my life forever,” Retzlaff stated in a press release. “I loved having matzo with peanut butter as a kid, and during Passover, my family and I would create matzo pizza together. Making potato latkes was our staple during Chanukah. Now, while at BYU, I can introduce these traditions to my teammates. This partnership means much more than just football—it’s about fostering connections and highlighting Jewish pride in ways I never anticipated.”
Jake’s influence on campus has significantly benefited the Jewish community in and around Provo, Utah. In 2023, he spearheaded Utah County’s inaugural public Hanukkah menorah lighting and has acted as an ambassador for Jewish traditions and a source of inspiration for young people. The brand feels that Retzlaff, among just three Jewish students attending the university, embodies numerous values parallel to those of the company, making for an ideal partnership.
“We are thrilled to officially bring Jake into the Manischewitz family this holiday season,” remarked Shani Seidman, CMO of Kayco, the parent entity of Manischewitz, in a press release. “His story is incredibly motivating, and we are delighted to back his inspiring football journey and aspirations. This partnership epitomizes everything we strive for as a brand—honoring our heritage and raising awareness about Jewish food and excellence.”
This season, Retzlaff has led BYU to a 10-2 record and reached a ranking as high as No. 7 in the AP Top 25. After beginning his career at Riverside City College in the JUCO ranks, he made the transition to Provo prior to the 2023 season. Having participated in four games for the Cougars last year, Retzlaff has emerged as one of the most proficient QBs in the Big 12 this season, throwing for 2,796 yards and 20 touchdowns.
