The inaugural Hornbill E-Sports Championship Season 1 kicked off on 6 December 2024 at Hall B, Indira Gandhi Stadium, Kohima.
Special Guest, NCS Secretary for the Government of Nagaland, Youth Resources & Sports, Anthony Ngullie, emphasized in his address the significant transformation in systems, especially in sports, which have shifted from traditional physical activities to digital competitions. He noted that the times have evolved, and it is crucial for us to adjust our perspectives and welcome advancement. Ngullie shared his excitement about the department’s capacity to host Nagaland’s first e-sports tournament, expressing hopes for its positive impact on the youth.
Kethosituo Sekhose, the program chair and Director of Youth Resources and Sports, highlighted that our generation has experienced a revolution, pointing out that sports are not limited to physical engagement anymore. With the advent of technology, he suggested it is time to explore new pathways and inspire our youth to follow their passions while also generating income.
Sekhose expressed optimism that events like these would enable players from Nagaland to compete on national and international platforms, aiming for e-sports champions from northeast India to shine globally in the future.
Speaking to the press during the event, Sekhose pointed out that organizing such occasions generates job opportunities, as stalls and volunteers will be utilized. He also noted that youth from our state are making a living through these e-sports and other online platforms.
The DYRS Director emphasized the necessity of changing our mindset to keep in sync with technological advancements, which have become significant income sources for young people. He recognized that youth have exceptional skills, particularly in design and creative thinking, and advocated for creating opportunities that can provide them with a platform.
During the event, games like BJMI, DOTA 2, and FC 24 were showcased.
Sixteen teams from the northeast will compete in the BJMI category, selected from a total of 84 teams following an online preliminary round.
In the DOTA 2 competition, five teams are vying for victory, picked from 14 that entered the preliminaries, while 32 teams are prepared to battle in FC 24.
Currently, there are 200 total participants engaged in the event. Initially, about 602 participants took part in the online preliminary rounds.
The program commenced with an invocation led by Vikhoto Zao.
On the following day, Dr. Mansukh L. Mandaviya, the Union Minister of Labour and Employment, Youth Affairs, and Sports, will attend the event as a special guest.
This event is organized by the Department of Youth Resources and Sports.
