KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Freshman forward Ginny Lackey of the James Madison women’s soccer squad has been selected for the United Soccer Coaches All-America Third Team, as reported by the organization on Friday evening. Lackey stands among 48 student-athletes nationwide to receive this honor, becoming the seventh Duke in the program’s history to earn a spot on an All-America Team, and the first since Teresa Rynier achieved Third Team recognition in 2010.
This recognition follows an impressive debut season for Lackey in the purple and gold, filled with outstanding accomplishments. She started 16 matches and recorded consecutive braces in her second and third collegiate matches, initiating a program record-tying streak of nine straight games in which she scored a goal. This goal-scoring streak coincided with her JMU record of 11 consecutive matches with at least one point.
Having netted 12 goals and provided ten assists for a total of 34 points throughout the season, Lackey became the first player at JMU, and the first since 2016 in the Sun Belt Conference, to claim both Player and Freshman of the Year honors in the same season, while also earning First Team All-Sun Belt and All-Tournament Team distinctions. In a single season at JMU, she is tied for fifth in points, tied for eighth in assists, and tied for ninth in goals. She also became the eighth Duke to achieve double-digit assists in a single season, marking the 13th 30-point season in the program’s history.
Lackey is the first Duke to achieve at least ten goals and assists in a single season since Julie Reule recorded 10 assists and 13 goals in 1994. Earlier this week, the freshman made history as the first semifinalist for the MAC Hermann Trophy in the program’s history.
