Luke Egan’s entry into the Australian Surfing Hall of Fame was the highlight of an incredible event celebrating Australian surfing excellence at HOTA, Home of the Arts, on the Gold Coast this evening. The former World Tour surfer from Newcastle was celebrated for his outstanding 22-year journey on the ASP/World Surf League Championship Tour, which featured four event victories and a second-place result in the 2000 World Title contest. Egan received the accolade from his close friend Matt Hoy and was joined by fellow surfing icons Joel Parkinson, Mark “Occy” Occhilupo, and Mark Richards for an interview, during which he reminisced about his career and conveyed his appreciation for being honoured alongside his idols.
This evening also recognised the top surfing accomplishments in Australia, with Olympians and World Tour athletes Jack Robinson and Molly Picklum named Male and Female Surfer of the Year, respectively. The Mick Fanning Rising Star Award was conferred upon Dane Henry, while Sierra Kerr was awarded the Stephanie Gilmore Rising Star Award. Additionally, Jocelyn Neumueller and Kai Colless were acknowledged as the Female and Male Para Surfers of the Year, respectively.
Surfing icon Layne Beachley was bestowed with Surfing Australia Life Membership for her remarkable contributions to the sport. A seven-time World Champion, Beachley is the only contender to have clinched six consecutive titles, and her influence transcends competitive achievements. Formerly the Chair of Surfing Australia, she has been a longstanding proponent of women’s surfing, advocating for fair pay, enhanced events, and improved chances for future surfers.
Tasmanian lensman Nick Green secured the Surf Photo of the Year for capturing big wave rider Laura Enever during “one of the gnarly wipeouts” at Shipstern Bluff. The Heavy Water Award was presented to Soli Bailey who, together with Chris Peel, earned the Surf Clip of the Year award. The Surf Film of the Year honour went to Jay Phillips Isn’t Dead.
Jordie Campbell was the recipient of the Indigenous Surfing Community Celebration Award. The Greater Good Award was claimed by the Surfrider Foundation, while Rivvia Projects was recognised as the Breakthrough Surf Brand of the Year, and Darren Handley was named Shaper of the Year.
Celebrated surf media personality Vaughan Blakey facilitated the event, which acknowledged the exceptional accomplishments of athletes and supporters across 20 categories. This award ceremony, held for the first time at the notable HOTA, Home of the Arts, on the Gold Coast, esteemed not just surfing champions but also individuals making strides in media, business, and innovation, showcasing the vast talent and commitment within the realm of Australian surfing.

The Australian Surfing Awards celebrate the exceptional accomplishments of Australia’s leading surfers and commend those working diligently behind the scenes in fields like event management, business, media, photography, and more.
This year’s awards will occur on Saturday, December 7, 2024, at a fresh venue—HOTA, Home of the Arts, on the Gold Coast, Queensland. Hosted by surf media legend Vaughan Blakey, the ceremony will feature 20 award categories, adding to the thrill of our premier award, the Australian Surfing Hall of Fame. The victor of the Hyundai She’s Electric contest will also be unveiled that evening.
The 2024 Australian Surfing Awards are eligible for Australian citizens and encompass accomplishments between January 1, 2024, and October 31, 2024.
