GOLDEN, Colo.
– The Colorado School of Mines kicked off the new indoor track & field season with impressive results, shattering three school records and winning four events on the opening day of the Alumni Classic held at Steinhauer Fieldhouse.
Avery Wright set new program records in both the pentathlon and the 60m hurdles, while Hayley Rayburn established new indoor pole vault records for both Mines and the RMAC, showcasing a day of exceptional performances for the Orediggers.
The standout performances came from the pentathlon pair of Wright and Sutherland during the day on Friday, with Wright achieving a program-record 3,822 points, marking the best pentathlon in the RMAC since 2016. Her day initiated with a program-record and NCAA-provisional 8.52-second finish in the 60m hurdles, surpassing her own previous record of 8.86 set during last year’s NCAA Indoors. Wright then cleared 1.53m in the high jump, matched her personal best in the shot put with a throw of 12.50m, and improved her previous indoor long jump record to win that event at 5.57m, concluding with a top 800m time of 2:26.32 for a total of 3,822 points.
Sutherland secured second place with a remarkable personal record of 3,506 points, improving by 516 points from her prior best, making her Mines’ second-best performer in history. Sutherland recorded a personal best of 8.89 seconds in the 60m hurdles (only behind Wright in Mines history), jumped 1.50m in the high jump, and threw 11.19m in the shot put. The long jump was crucial for her as she achieved a personal best of 5.54m and finished the 800m in 2:34.92.
Rayburn entered the evening’s pole vault competition at 4.07m and successfully cleared that height, as well as 4.17m and 4.28m, without any failures, marking a record-setting performance in her Mines debut and surpassing Hannah Miller’s previous 4.27m record from last year’s RMAC Championships. The graduate transfer also made an attempt at 4.35m before exiting the competition. Freshman Taylor Hindman had an impressive collegiate debut, finishing second by clearing two heights to reach 3.72m (#6 all-time at Mines), while Dale Thompson matched that height for third place. Madeline Obuchowski cleared 3.42m for seventh place. Hunter Potrykus began his season strongly with a winning vault of 5.23m in the men’s pole vault, clearing his first two heights before attempting 5.33m. Aidan Bennett took second place at 4.78m.
Kitt Rupar achieved an indoor personal best of 14.35m, winning the women’s shot put by nearly two meters, while Jennifer Jarnagin placed fourth with a throw of 11.86m in her inaugural collegiate event. In his debut for the Orediggers, Holden Murphy ranked #4 on the all-time men’s shot put list with a second-place throw of 16.31m, and Franklin Rambo closely followed with an indoor personal record of 15.83m.
Claire Kintzley recorded an indoor personal best of 5.49m, becoming the sole Mines long jump competitor in seventh place.
The meet will continue on Saturday, starting at 11 a.m., while a group of Mines distance runners will also compete at Boston University beginning at 10:50 a.m. ET.
