CONCORD, N.C. — Daniel Suárez, the only Mexican-born driver to win a NASCAR national series race, is out at Trackhouse Racing at the end of the 2025 season.

Trackhouse and Suárez officially called the parting a “mutual decision” that allows the driver an earlier opportunity to pursue a new ride for next season.

While Trackhouse did not name a replacement in the No. 99 Chevrolet, Suárez’s departure opened the door for the team to promote teen sensation Connor Zilisch into the ride. Zilisch, who drives in the Xfinity Series for JR Motorsports, has run three Cup races for Trackhouse this season, including Saturday night at Atlanta.

Suárez has just two wins in 305 career Cup starts, and is a distant 29th in the points standings this season. The 33-year-old Suarez is in his fifth season with Trackhouse Racing and was the team’s first driver in 2021. He made NASCAR’s playoffs two times with Trackhouse.

“We took a team nobody had even heard of in 2021 and in just a couple of years we were winning races and running upfront on a weekly basis,” Suárez wrote on social media. “Just like the seasons in a year, sometimes things change and we have agreed to each go in our own direction.”

Trackhouse founder and owner Justin Marks thanked Suárez for his contributions.

“The role Daniel has played in the Trackhouse origin story and its first five years will remain a valued part of the company’s history forever,” Marks said. “His commitment, work ethic and dedication to the effort is one of the most impressive things I personally have seen in my career.”

Trackhouse Racing also has Ross Chastain and Shane van Gisbergen under contract, along with Zilisch is its development driver. Chastain has six career wins and was the 2022 Cup Series runner-up while van Gisbergen has a win this year and is in the playoffs.

Suárez, who became an American citizen last year, also has three Xfinity Series wins and one Truck Series win. His 2016 championship in the second-tier Xfinity Series made him the only foreign-born driver to win a national series title.

He made a triumphant return last month to his home country when he won the Xfinity Series race in Mexico City driving for JR Motorsports at Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez.

Yet the balance of celebrating a homecoming with looming contract negotiations weighed on Suárez.

“It’s not the first time that I’ve been in this position. Definitely the first time with the Mexico race, but it’s not the first time that I’ve been in the position that we have to win or in the position that we have a contract negotiation in the middle of the season,” Suárez said. “It’s definitely a distraction. I won’t sit here and tell you that it doesn’t really matter. I’m trying to be as smart as possible and to put all this stuff on the side and just do my thing on the track.”

He’ll do his thing at the track in 2026 with yet another new team.

Suarez started his Cup career with Joe Gibbs Racing and has raced for Stewart-Haas Racing and Gaunt Brothers Racing. He has Cup wins in 2022 at Sonoma and last year in Atlanta.

Developers withdraw plans for data center on NASCAR legend’s land in Mooresville

MOORESVILLE, N.C. (WBTV) – Developers have withdrawn plans to build a multibillion-dollar data center in Iredell County, the mayor of Mooresville said Wednesday.

The plans had called for the campus to be built between Patterson Farm and Rustic roads in Mooresville, on land owned by Teresa Earnhardt — the widow of NASCAR legend Dale Earnhardt.

Those plans were met with significant opposition from the community, including from Earnhardt’s eldest son, Kerry.

Ahead of a public hearing, Kerry wrote on social media that his dad would have been “livid” over the proposal. Then, the day that the mayor said the plans had been pulled — Aug. 13 — Kerry published a 22-minute video on YouTube.

“I think, you know, some people have voices that reach further than others,” Kerry said. “And if my voice is that voice, I’m here to speak it … for our community, for our neighbors, for our family, for our friends.”

Kerry reemphasized in the YouTube video that the land was some that his father farmed and hunted on, and talked about the memories made on the property.

“It’s property that Dad was proud of,” Kerry said. “He would always go out there deer hunting, turkey hunting, but our favorite time was dove hunting … The smile he always had on his face when he was riding around, picking with guys, bringing them shells, bringing them snacks, bringing them drinks, riding the outskirts of the property to try to flush the doves back up — that’s what it was about.”

Others in the community expressed concerns over noise and traffic.

“Try to save some country land — if nothing else for the environment, for Pete’s sake,” one woman said before the plans were scrapped. “For green spaces, for kids to grow up safe and sound without traffic.”

Now, with the plans pulled, the Earnhardt land will stay as is, at least for the foreseeable future.

The Mooresville mayor said talk of the project has been removed from all future town meeting agendas and there is no longer an “active request” to build the data center.

The plan was first presented to town leaders in June and would have created more than 100 jobs.

NASCAR National Series – NCS/NCTS

Heim back in No. 67 Camry XSE … Toyota Development Driver Corey Heim will once again pilot the No. 67 Toyota Camry XSE for 23XI Racing in this weekend’s Cup Series race at Richmond Raceway. The Georgia native makes his third start of the season in NASCAR’s top series and sixth of his career this Saturday night as he continues his development with 23XI Racing. Heim will also balance this Cup start with his full-time duties in the Truck Series this weekend, coming off a victory at Watkins Glen last weekend with his No. 11 Toyota Tundra TRD Pro team.

Wallace continuing hot streak … Last weekend’s eighth-place result at Watkins Glen extended Bubba Wallace’s top-10 streak to four consecutive races, dating back to Dover Motor Speedway in July. The 23XI Racing driver now has 10 top-10s in total on the season, with four top-fives and his Brickyard 400 win. Saturday night’s race will mark Wallace’s 280th career Cup Series start.

Honeycutt debuts in No. 52 Tundra TRD Pro … Willow Park, Texas, native Kaden Honeycutt makes his first start with Halmar Friesen Racing in the No. 52 Toyota Tundra TRD Pro this weekend in Richmond, as he fills in for the injured Stewart Friesen. He currently sits eighth in the Truck Series driver points standings, entering Friday night’s regular season finale.

Reaves back in No. 18 Camry … For the third time in the national ARCA Menards Series this season, Max Reaves will pilot the No. 18 Toyota Camry for Joe Gibbs Racing. NASCAR’s Mike Forde reveals timeline for decision

Mike Forde, NASCAR’s managing director of racing communications, said on Wednesday’s “Hauler Talk” podcast they hope to have a decision on Stewart Friesen‘s possible playoff waiver request made by Friday morning. Mike Forde, NASCAR’s managing director of racing communications, said on Wednesday’s “Hauler Talk” podcast they hope to have a decision on Stewart Friesen‘s possible playoff waiver request made by Friday morning. While that request has not yet been made — Friesen could not request a waiver until he officially missed a race — Forde said they expect it to come this week.

From there, NASCAR must decide if they want to grant Friesen a waiver. Friesen is out for the remainder of the Truck Series season with a broken pelvis and a fractured right leg. By missing last Saturday’s race at Watkins Glen International and this Friday’s race at Richmond Raceway, he is ineligible for the Truck playoffs without the waiver.

“We have not received the waiver request yet, but we have spoken with the team. Believe that request will be coming this week,” Forde said. “But then the next step in the process is discussing whether or not we grant it. TBD on that, but we are hoping to have the waiver and decision made by the opening of the truck garage Friday morning.”

How important is a playoff waiver to Stewart Friesen?

Friesen has a financial incentive to make the 10-driver postseason field. As Forde explained on last week’s Hauler Talk, Friesen would be guaranteed to finish 10th and receive the 10th-place point fund money, even without starting a race. Friesen qualified for the playoffs by winning at Michigan International Speedway.

If NASCAR declines Friesen’s waiver request, the next highest-ranked driver in the points standings would fill the playoff spot. Based on Forde’s comments on Wednesday’s show, everyone will be in the know before the start of Friday night’s regular season finale at Richmond Raceway.

“The goal there is to make sure that fans, our broadcast partners at FOX and all the media, everyone knows what’s on the line Friday night, whether if there is going to be one spot available or two,” Forde said. “I think if the waiver isn’t granted, I believe there’s only one spot left on the line. Kaden Honeycutt I believe will only need to start the race Friday night to lock up his spot and that will be nine of the 10.

“And then, it’s really just a battle for that last spot. More to come on that, but I think fans will know the fate and what we’ll look at by Friday morning.”

Plenty of sons, brothers and fathers have raced at Daytona, as well as a handful of daughters and sisters.

But Natalie Decker will alter the dynamics dramatically next week when she becomes just the second mother to turn NASCAR laps at Daytona International Speedway. Decker announced Wednesday she is entered in the Xfinity Series race next Friday (Aug. 22), driving the No. 92 Chevrolet for DGM Racing, which also fields a full-time Xfinity car with driver Josh Bilicki.

It will be Decker’s first NASCAR start since May of 2024 and obviously the first since giving birth to a son, Levi, this past February. Decker, 28, is married to Derek Lemke, who also raced a few NASCAR events in previous years.

Natalie Decker will make her third Xfinity Series start at Daytona next week, and the first anywhere since becoming a mother in February.

Natalie Decker will make her third Xfinity Series start at Daytona next week, and the first anywhere since becoming a mother in February.

Decker is reported to become just the second mother to race in NASCAR, following Shawna Robinson, whose NASCAR efforts lasted from 1991-2005. She had two children in the mid-’90s.

Since 2016, Decker has raced in NASCAR’s Xfinity (12 starts) and Truck Series (32 starts), as well as 31 starts in the ARCA stock-car series, a NASCAR affiliate.

And she’s no stranger to Daytona, where some of her best NASCAR accomplishments have taken place. She finished fifth in a Chevy truck in that series’ 2020 season opener, and fifth after winning the pole for ARCA’s season opener in 2018. She finished 18th in the 2024 season-opening Xfinity race, her second start on the Daytona tri-oval.

When NASCAR revealed the preliminary entry list for Saturday’s NASCAR Cup Series Cook Out 400 at Richmond Raceway, there were 39 cars set to make the trek out to the 0.750-mile short track. However, a few days later, the car count is down to 38 cars.

Originally, the No. 44 NY Racing Team was entered with a driver who was to be announced. However, as of an update to the entry list on Tuesday afternoon, the No. 44 NY Racing Team has withdrawn from the event.

The NY Racing Team last competed at Watkins Glen International a weekend ago, where JJ Yeley piloted the No. 44 Chevrolet, which featured sponsorship from the Syracuse University Football program. Yeley finished 38th last weekend at Watkins Glen, a race that had very little attrition.

The NY Racing Team has attempted 10 NASCAR Cup Series starts this season, and has made the field for nine of them. The lone DNQ for the No. 44 entry came heartbreakingly in the season-opening Daytona 500.

JJ Yeley, the driver of the car at Daytona International Speedway, was in a position in the Duel qualifier to advance into the Daytona 500 starting lineup in the closing laps, but Martin Truex Jr., the 2017 NASCAR Cup Series champion, worked his way around Yeley in the closing laps to secure his place in the field instead.

Currently, the No. 44 NY Racing Team ranks 46th of 49 in the NASCAR Cup Series Owner Standings, and the team has a best finish of 32nd, which it achieved with Yeley at Talladega Superspeedway and with Derek Kraus at Charlotte Motor Speedway.

Brennan Poole also made a start for the team at Pocono Raceway. Poole would finish 34th in the one-off NASCAR Cup Series start with NY Racing.
