A swimmer who has earned four gold medals at the Paralympics played a crucial role in supporting a local radio station with its charitable endeavor.
Maisie Summers-Newton, 22, hailing from Wollaston in Northamptonshire, secured two golds and a bronze for Paralympics GB during the Paris 2024 events.
As part of this year’s Thousand Mile Challenge for Children in Need, she completed over 50 lengths at the Mounts Baths pool in Northampton.
BBC Northampton collaborated with other radio stations throughout the UK, aiming to swim a combined distance of 1,000 miles (1,609km) within a week.
After her swimming session, Summers-Newton expressed that it “was enjoyable” and “fantastic to swim [with the Breakfast crew].”
The Mounts Baths hold significant familiarity for Summers-Newton, as she often trains there.
Returning to the pool evoked “many memories” for the Paralympian, especially the early wake-up calls at 04:00 GMT.
She admitted that the charity swim was merely the “seventh time” she had entered a pool since the Paris games, which left her feeling “a bit out of practice” but nonetheless managed to surpass all the breakfast show’s attendees.
With Summers-Newton’s assistance, the team achieved their final 300 lengths toward the 24-mile objective.
Presenter Annabel Amos remarked: “I am quite pleased that I shared a lane with Maisie Summers-Newton.”
“We did [the challenge!].”
