What are Air Yards?

Air Yards quantify how far the football is thrown beyond the line of scrimmage during a passing play. Some Air Yards result from completed passes while others are from incomplete attempts. While they may not perfectly predict future fantasy success, they serve as a useful tool for making lineup selections.

This season, we will analyze the Air Yards statistic to highlight players you should consider starting in your fantasy lineups, those who underperformed but are likely to bounce back based on their Air Yards, and players you can afford to overlook despite high Air Yards totals.

Air Yards Stars from Week 13

Jerry Jeudy | Cleveland Browns — 206 Air Yards (2nd Overall)

Jerry Jeudy put on a show Monday night, racking up an incredible 40.5 fantasy points with nine receptions for 235 yards and a touchdown. Since Jameis Winston became the Browns’ starter, Jeudy has averaged 127 Air Yards per game across 10 targets. He is undoubtedly a starter for the fantasy playoffs and possesses the capability to clinch victories, as demonstrated by his outstanding performance last week.

Parker Washington | Jacksonville Jaguars — 151 Air Yards (7th Overall)

Parker Washington had a breakout game with 24.3 fantasy points last week, achieving 151 Air Yards on 12 targets. With Gabe Davis sidelined for the rest of the season, Washington steps into the role of WR2 for the Jaguars, lined up opposite Brian Thomas Jr. Interestingly, Washington ran three more routes than BTJ last week despite having fewer snaps. While repeating this performance against a strong Tennessee Titans defense in Week 14 might be challenging, with six teams on bye, Washington could be a worthwhile desperation flex option in PPR leagues.

Brian Thomas Jr. | Jacksonville Jaguars— 143 Air Yards (2nd Overall)

Although Parker Washington accumulated the most fantasy points among Jaguars receivers in Week 13, his teammate Brian Thomas Jr led the team in Air Yards, posting 18.7 fantasy points. Since his breakout in Week 4, BTJ has struggled to maintain consistency with Mac Jones as his quarterback.

From Week 4 until Trevor Lawrence’s shoulder injury led to his absences after Week 9, BTJ averaged 15.7 fantasy points and 73 Air Yards per game. However, since Week 9, and before last week, he averaged only 8.6 fantasy points with 60 Air Yards per game. If BTJ consistently sees 100 Air Yards, he should be poised for fantasy success irrespective of who is throwing him the ball.

Players Who Underperformed but Are Set to Recover

Calvin Ridley | Tennessee Titans — 138 Air Yards (11th Overall)

No discussion of Air Yards would be complete without mentioning Calvin Ridley. The inconsistent Ridley had a tough outing in Week 13, managing just 6.5 fantasy points with seven targets and 138 Air Yards. Stick with Ridley this week, especially with a favorable matchup against the Jaguars secondary. His outlook for the rest of the season indicates he could become a league-winning fantasy playoff player, particularly with favorable matchups against vulnerable secondaries starting this week through Week 17.
