Famed Physiotherapist and India’s Pioneer BFR Trainer, Dr GD Prathap, articulates, “Blood flow restriction, also referred to as vascular occlusion training, is a traditional concept that began in Japan during the 1960s, known as KAATSU training. It is utilized by skilled professionals, particularly physiotherapists, for elderly patients, post-operative rehabilitation, or enhancing athletic performance.”

The goal of BFR training is to replicate the benefits of high-intensity exercise by creating a low-oxygen environment through the application of a cuff or strap that moderately tightens around the limbs during workouts.

How Does it Function?

This technique operates by decreasing the oxygen and nutrient supply to the muscles engaging in light activity, imitating the effects of intense exercise. “Limiting blood flow generates metabolic byproducts akin to those from heavy workouts. The buildup of these byproducts heightens the hormonal reaction to exercise stress,” explains Dr. Prathap.

Advantages of BFR Training

BFR training can aid a diverse group of people, including those recuperating from surgeries like ligament reconstruction, dealing with age-related muscle deterioration, osteoporosis, diabetes, or chronic health conditions impacting muscle health. Nonetheless, it is not appropriate for everyone; individuals with uncontrolled high blood pressure, bleeding issues or vascular injuries, chronic heart ailments, children, and pregnant women should steer clear of it.
