The San Marcos girls water polo team had a mixed result with a 1-1 record during a doubleheader against two prominent programs on Saturday at Santa Barbara High.

The Royals opened the day with a tough 10-7 defeat against Newport Harbor, but they bounced back with an impressive 10-8 win over Mater Dei.

In the loss, San Marcos’ Sophie Yonker, Naomi Enright, and Bethany King each contributed two goals. 

Charlotte Raisin spearheaded the victory with four goals, while Lucy Haaland-Ford and Enright each netted two. King also excelled as the goalkeeper, achieving nine saves.

“Today was a true team effort. Junior Bethany King stood out; she played the entire match in goal for the Royals as a field player,” stated San Marcos coach Chuckie Roth.

“[King] exemplifies what it means to be a team player, always willing to sacrifice for her team’s success. I truly appreciate her commitment to playing out of position.”

Currently, San Marcos holds a record of 3-1 for the season and is set to face Foothill High on Wednesday.

Santa Barbara High @ Mistletoe Classic

The Dons ended the final day of the Mistletoe Classic at Newbury Park High with a split result of 1-1.

Santa Barbara High claimed victory over Palisades with a score of 15-5, powered by Juliana Horton’s seven goals. Meanwhile, Rose Nelley scored three times, and Ava Jordan along with Kana Wolfe each added two goals.

On the defensive side, Audrey Skultety excelled with seven saves.

Following that, the Dons faced Camarillo and fell 18-15, despite Horton making history with a record-setting 10 goals in a single match.

Horton broke the previous records held by Olympians Kami Craig and Thalia Munro. Nelley also contributed with two goals in the loss.

Santa Barbara High will play against Oxnard on the road this Thursday.

Carpinteria High @ Mistletoe Classic

The Warriors concluded the weekend in 10th place out of 16 teams after a 2-2 performance at the Mistletoe Classic.

Carpinteria High secured victories over Oxnard (13-3) and Malibu (12-5), but suffered defeats against Palos Verdes (19-4) and Westlake (14-9).

Holliday Smith recorded a total of 13 goals and seven steals throughout the four matches, while Giulia Piccoletti (6 goals, 8 steals, 7 assists) and Hazel Dugre (6 goals, 6 steals) had strong all-around performances. Madison Lee also contributed with seven goals.

In goal, Gwen Postma made 24 saves, along with six steals and eight assists.

The Warriors (6-5) are set to compete against Rio Mesa on the road this Monday.
