BALTIMORE — The UMBC Women’s Swimming squad achieved a remarkable five-for-five in setting new pool records at the UMBC Aquatic Complex on Saturday afternoon during a non-scoring contest against Frostburg State and Mount St. Mary’s.

“Our pool has an impressive legacy filled with Olympic Champions and world record holders,” remarked head coach Matt Donovan. “Competing alongside them today is an incredible privilege. This team excels in embracing challenges. Achieving ten for ten (in total) on pool relay records was a significant challenge, and we accomplished it. This was a collective effort. Every individual on this team contributed to our success today. I could not be more proud of this group. What a fantastic day to be a Retriever!”

The first race of the day set the tone as Bruna de Padua, Elze Bielskute, Nicol Davanzo and Ashley Gutshall clinched the 200 Medley Relay in 1:43.80, surpassing the former record of 1:45.30 set by UMBC in 2015.

Shortly thereafter, de Padua, Nicole Lopez Kohlmann, Megan Gangaway and Claire Oettinger established the 800 Free Relay pool record with a time of 7:35.12, breaking the previous record of 7:37.92 from 2005 by New Hampshire.

Gutshall, Lopez Kohlmann, Oettinger, and Makaela Hill then shattered the pool record in the 200 Free Relay, clocking in at 1:34.42, surpassing the old mark of 1:36.32 set by the 2005 New Hampshire team.

In the following event, de Padua, Bielskute, Davanzo, and Hill broke the 400 Medley Relay record with a time of 3:48.49, eclipsing the previous best of 3:50.00 set by UMBC in 2019.

The last record of the day was set in the concluding event, as de Padua, Hill, Gutshall, and Oettinger finished the 400 Free Relay in 3:24.83, obliterating the former pool record of 3:29.20 which was set by Navy in 2015.

UMBC is slated to have over a month break before they face La Salle in Philadelphia on January 17th.
