FINAL: 78-68 Tennessee

Gus Martin

Iowa showed some excellent moments tonight but couldn’t bounce back from 30 (!) turnovers.

The Hawkeyes need to leverage this game footage for improvement, as opponents in the Big Ten Conference will likely reference it as a successful strategy, particularly against press defense.

Lucy Olsen stood out with impressive stats, scoring 23 points and providing five assists.

Q4 1:57, 71-67 Vols — Hawkeyes facing challenges

Gus Martin

Tennessee has gone on a 9-1 scoring streak, finished off by another turnover from Iowa leading to a corner 3-pointer.

The Hawkeyes have now added up to 29 turnovers for the night. As per the broadcast, Iowa has not secured a victory when exceeding 25 turnovers since 2009.

Tonight, it does not seem likely that they will break that record.

Q4 5:52, 62-59 Iowa — Intense competition

Gus Martin

Feuerbach ignited a change in momentum by assisting Olsen for a layup on a fastbreak, followed by drawing an offensive foul through solid defensive play.

The Hawkeyes appeared to gain renewed energy and are determined to keep the game competitive.

Olsen is indeed a remarkable talent, now with 21 points and five assists, and just executed a clever pass for a basket.

End 3: 55-52 Vols — Tennessee regains the lead

Gus Martin

Tennessee managed to regain the lead with an and-1 in the closing seconds. Iowa needs to focus and handle the ball more carefully to secure a win.

The Hawkeyes’ bench play has also been minimal, having remained stuck on 10 points for quite some time.

This game has truly showcased a contrast of styles for both teams. Iowa excelled on rebounding but struggled with turnovers. Tennessee dominated with defensive control and patient pacing.

Q3 5:03, 44-43 Iowa — Hawkeyes precariously positioned

Gus Martin

Iowa’s turnover count is now up to 21! Tennessee is shooting 35.3% from the floor and has been outscored at the free-throw line by eight, which keeps this contest open.

This game may serve as an early indication of Iowa’s potential at this point in the season. Having one primary ball-handler, Olsen, can expose the team to challenges against longer, athletic, and more aggressive teams like the Lady Vols, of whom there are several possessing those strengths and a better offensive game.

Iowa’s current shooting rate of 3-for-11 from long range is also unusually low for them.

Q3 8:31, 37-37 — Olsen facing foul issues

Gus Martin

Olsen picked up her third foul early, but head coach Jan Jensen opted to keep her in the game, recognizing her importance to Iowa’s performance.

Shortly afterward, Olsen took a hit to the head while driving to the basket. The officials are reviewing the incident to determine if it warrants an elevation in the foul assessment. Fortunately for the Hawkeyes, Olsen emerged unscathed and was even seen laughing on the floor.

The second half has begun!

Gus Martin

Iowa faced turnover issues (18).

Tennessee struggled with 3-point shooting (2-for-16).

Whoever resolves these problems first might claim victory.

Halftime: 35-35 — Hawkeyes cool off

Gus Martin

I don’t have all the specific stats, but it felt like Iowa barely scored during the latter part of the second quarter, apart from a free throw by Stuelke.

Iowa’s 18 turnovers are clearly evident. Tennessee, an aggressive defensive unit with athletic players all around, certainly capitalized, but no team can maintain a lead when giving up so many possessions.

If Iowa focuses on controlling the tempo and plays more securely, they should have a good shot at winning. However, Olsen needs to keep away from foul trouble, as she currently has two fouls and is undoubtedly Iowa’s key ball-handler.

She led the team with 11 points.

Q2 3:27, 34-28 Iowa — Hawkeyes maintain slim advantage

Gus Martin

Iowa has managed to stay ahead by a few baskets for most of the quarter, despite Olsen being sidelined for significant time with two fouls.

Hannah Stuelke merits recognition. Given Tennessee’s height and athleticism, her contributions on both ends are crucial for Iowa. She’s been effective, contributing six points, four rebounds, three assists, and a steal.

However, it’s her confidence and leadership that stand out, especially when contrasted with her role last season. Previously, she was an underclassman finding her footing in a roster filled with stars; now she clearly embraces a more commanding presence, serving as a stabilizing force for the Hawkeyes.

Although it may not reflect in the stats, Stuelke’s growth and maturity are apparent.

End 1: 22-18 Iowa — Olsen makes her return!

Gus Martin

Iowa welcomed back Olsen at an opportune moment.

The standout guard contributed 11 points in the quarter, scoring nine in the closing minutes, including a tenacious and-1 play.

However, neither team showcased their best performance. They combined to hit just 1-of-17 from beyond the arc, with the Hawkeyes tallying nine turnovers.

Maintaining a lead after such a start is promising for the future.

Q1 4:17, 10-10 — Hawkeyes quickly bounce back

Gus Martin

There’s no denying it; Iowa appeared unsettled during the opening minutes. Tennessee jumped to a 6-0 advantage after Iowa had turnovers on its first three possessions, escalating into a 10-2 deficit.

Eventually, Iowa regained composure, attacked the paint, and equalized by the initial timeout.

Iowa needs to effectively manage the Lady Vols’ renowned defensive pressure, but it’s encouraging to see the Hawkeyes recover before the gap widened.

Is Lucy Olsen participating today? ‘Most likely’

Gus Martin

Before one of Iowa’s practices at the Cancun Challenge, Olsen tripped on an elevated area, resulting in a cut on her knee. This injury kept the 5-foot-10 guard out of Iowa’s games against Rhode Island and BYU.

However, the star guard is anticipated to return for this highly-anticipated encounter, which should provide Iowa with a significant advantage in their most challenging match of the early season.

“It’s more likely than not (Olsen will play) because she’s very tough,” stated head coach Jan Jensen on Tuesday. “We just have to evaluate how it reacted (Tuesday) with increased activity and see how it is (Wednesday). I feel hopeful about it, but I will be even more reassured (Wednesday) when I hear it responded positively.”

“It’s a bit ridiculous,” Olsen remarked this week. “We were on the verge of practicing, and I tripped on the court because it was slightly raised. Then I fell. There was a tile that sliced my knee open.”

Olsen is leading the team with an average of 17.3 points per game, along with 5.3 assists and 4.5 rebounds per game, shooting 48.9% from the floor and 68.8% from the free throw line.
