The superintendent of the Patchogue-Medford school district reported that racial insults were hurled at players during a high school basketball match against West Islip on Friday night.

In a correspondence, the superintendent stated that “certain fans aimed jeers and racial slurs at our players” throughout the event in West Islip.

Although it does not provide details, it describes the episode as “unacceptable and profoundly concerning.”

Parents who shared their thoughts with News 12 also voiced apprehension.

“Regardless of the outcome, one should always demonstrate respect and honor towards a team,” remarked one parent. “Whether you win or lose, sportsmanship should always be upheld.”

In a statement, West Islip School Superintendent Paul Romanelli informed News 12 that the district is looking into the reported incident.
