The Neshannock High girls basketball team fought hard for a win Friday evening.
The Lady Lancers stayed undefeated with a 65-58 overtime victory against Lakeview in the opening round of the Lakeview Tipoff Tournament.
Neshannock (2-0) was down 47-45 with only 18 seconds left in regulation. The Lady Lancers missed a shot, but Payton Newman secured the rebound. Newman then passed to Jaidon Nogay, who made a field goal to tie the game.
Neshannock established a nine-point lead in overtime and never looked back. The Lady Lancers were 9 of 10 from the free throw line during the extra period. Nogay went 4 of 4, and Sophia Bonner made 5 of 6 attempts. Lakeview committed four turnovers in succession during overtime.
“It was an exciting high school basketball game,” Neshannock coach Luann Grybowski remarked. “They’re a strong team; they played excellent defense against us.
“They disrupted us often. We need challenges like this to improve. It really speaks volumes about our team. We didn’t lose our composure. Defensively, we performed well. The kids showed resilience.”
Newman scored 18 points for the Lady Lancers, while Nogay followed with 16. Bonner contributed 12 points for Neshannock.
Newman also achieved 10 rebounds and three steals, while Nogay had six steals and Bonner collected four. Maddie Arrow and Ainsley Allison each grabbed five rebounds for the winners.
Kyndra Sedden led the Lady Sailors with 21 points.
The Lady Lancers have two games scheduled for Saturday. They will face General McLane at 2:30 p.m. in the concluding game of the Lakeview Tournament. Following that, Neshannock will battle Quaker Valley at 7:30 p.m. at New Castle High as part of The Clash.
Boys
UNION 51,
JEFFERSON-MORGAN 43
Lucas Stanley led the Scotties with 22 points in a nonsection win over the Rockets during the opening round of the Fort Cherry Tournament.
Stanley also secured nine rebounds for Union (3-0). Maddox Thompson contributed 12 points for the Scotties, and Jamel Mitchell grabbed nine boards.
Thompson scored seven of his points in the final quarter as Union secured the win.
“The game was quite chaotic,” said Scotties coach Mark Stanley. “Thompson’s points in the fourth quarter were crucial for us.”
John Woodward scored 13 points for Jefferson-Morgan.
Union will face the winner of the Fort Cherry-Monessen game at 7 p.m. on Saturday.
RIVERSIDE 51,
LAUREL 35
The host Panthers triumphed to hand the Spartans their first defeat of the season in a nonsection game.
Riverside (4-0) held a 13-5 lead after the first quarter and went into halftime with a 25-21 advantage. The Panthers expanded their lead to 35-23 midway through the third quarter and ended the third with a 38-32 cushion.
Jayden Iorio led Laurel (3-1) with 11 points.
McCartney Plassmeyer scored 19 points for Riverside.
The Spartans will visit Ellwood City Lincoln at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday.
Bowling
New Castle sweeps
The boys and girls teams of the ‘Canes both achieved 7-0 victories over Seneca Valley in a home match at Sims Lanes.
Jeffrey Natale recorded the boys’ high game for New Castle (2-0) with a score of 268, while Jonah Clare achieved the high series with a 638.
The Lady Canes improved to 1-1. Joelle Bradley had the high game of 160 for New Castle, and Jenalyn Nero led the team with a high series of 368.
New Castle will host Rochester at 7 p.m. on Wednesday at Sims Lanes.
