LEXINGTON, Ky. — The Cooper High School football squad wrapped up its season as the Class 5A state runner-up on Saturday evening in Lexington.
Bowling Green triumphed over Cooper 37-20 at Kroger Field. This marks the second consecutive season that Bowling Green has bested Cooper in the Class 5A state championship.
Cooper finished the season with a record of 13-1, while Bowling Green improved to 12-2 for the year.
Cam O’Hara, a junior quarterback for Cooper, completed 18 of 27 passes for 262 yards and threw three touchdowns. Senior wide receiver Jaiden Combs caught seven passes for 72 yards along with a touchdown. Additionally, senior wide receiver Isaiah Johnson recorded five receptions for 89 yards and a touchdown.
Junior wide receiver/safety Ryker Campbell made three catches totaling 72 yards. He also contributed with three kick returns for 57 yards and secured an interception on defense. Senior tight end Austin Alexander had three receptions for 29 yards and a touchdown while also making a sack defensively.
Junior linebacker Max Wethington posted 13 tackles (8 solo), while junior linebacker Dax Bolen and senior defensive end Mike Mullvihill each tallied 10 tackles.
Before the game on Saturday night, Cooper had outscored opponents 644 to 215. This season, the Jaguars had notable victories against Ryle, Highlands (twice), and Great Crossing, paving their way to a second consecutive state final.
Cooper was the third team to contend for a state title in Lexington during this weekend.
Earlier on Saturday night, Ryle (11-3) concluded its season as the Class 6A state runner-up.
Beechwood emerged victorious against Owensboro Catholic 50-34 on Friday night in the Class 2A state final, becoming Greater Cincinnati’s sole football state champion this season.
This victory marks Beechwood’s 18th football state title, and it adds to their 23rd appearance in the championship game.
