Bangladesh badminton referee found dead in Guwahati hotel

Guwahati: A Bangladeshi badminton official was discovered deceased in his hotel accommodation late Friday night, leaving the sports community in utter disbelief. The situation was revealed the following morning, with an autopsy conducted on Sunday, according to police reports.
The victim has been recognized as Mohammed Nazib Ismail (52), an umpire accredited by the Badminton World Federation. He was officiating at the Yonex Sunrise Badminton tournament taking place at Sarusajai Indoor Sports Complex in Guwahati, which started on December 3 and wrapped up on Sunday.
Authorities from Basistha police station were alerted on Saturday by hotel personnel who found Ismail unresponsive in his room. Tirtha Deka, the investigator on the case, mentioned that he was quickly taken to a nearby private hospital in Khanapara, where he was pronounced dead upon arrival. “We haven’t identified any visible injuries, and a case of unnatural death is under investigation,” the officer stated.
After his passing, Ismail’s remains were forwarded to Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) for an autopsy. “We await the post-mortem findings before making any determinations,” the officer continued.
Omar Rashid, general secretary of the Badminton Association of India, reported that Ismail was residing alone at a hotel in the Beltola region. “He was by himself in his room, and we suspect he may have suffered a heart attack or stroke. We cannot confirm anything until the autopsy results have been received. During his duties, he exhibited remarkable diligence, and we never noticed any health issues,” Rashid remarked.
Rashid further noted that Ismail’s body will be returned to his family on Monday close to the India-Bangladesh border at Dawki in Meghalaya. “Representatives from the Bangladesh Embassy and the Assam Badminton Association will be present at the handover to his family,” Rashid stated.
Ismail is survived by his wife and two daughters.
