Oregon Ducks head coach Dan Lanning can occasionally be quite succinct, dependent on the inquiries posed to him. However, following the triumph over the Big Ten Championship against the Penn State Nittany Lions in Indianapolis on Saturday, he expressed abundant sentiments regarding his respect for Oregon alum and co-founder of Nike, Phil Knight.
In his postgame address to the media, Lanning was joined by quarterback Dillon Gabriel, wide receiver Tez Johnson, and linebacker Bryce Boettcher. The Ducks’ mentor mentioned that he had taken some time to contemplate the journey he has shared with Knight.
“When you partake in games like this, I think it encourages you to reflect on the journey you’ve traveled and your presence here,” Lanning remarked. “But what truly brings me happiness is the loved ones who share this journey with you — these guys here, Phil, my parents. For them to witness a night like this, I understand its significance to them. That carries far greater weight for me than any achievement I may attain, their ability to share in that success.”
Knight is well-known for his passion for the Ducks as one of the university’s most notable alumni. The Portland, Oregon, native has contributed generously to the institution over the years, to the extent that Oregon is frequently referred to as the “University of Nike.”
Among numerous other achievements, Knight was the CEO of Nike when the corporation inked a deal with LeBron James in 2003, but it is the affection he displays for Oregon that resonates most with Lanning and the players.
Knight is a pivotal player in Division Street, Oregon’s collective for name, image, and likeness. Alongside the recruitment skills of Lanning and his team, the Ducks recently earned the third-ranked recruiting class for the 2025 cycle according to On3’s evaluations.
“He has a deep affection for this University,” Lanning stated. “He is invaluable to this University. Frequently, Phil is recognized for his contributions to the football team, but when discussing his philanthropic efforts, both he and his wife Penny, what they do for the well-being of society, what would college athletics look like without Phil Knight?”
“And how would athletics overall appear without Phil Knight? What would cancer research seem like without Phil Knight? I find it hard to articulate that. We are thankful for his input. Clearly, a significant factor in our achievements is ensuring we get to recognize him,” remarked Lanning.
Knight will be eager for his undefeated Ducks to continue their success when they face the victor of the Ohio State and Tennessee at the Rose Bowl on January 1.
