Aidan Ross, a key player in Super Rugby, is set to join the Queensland Reds on a multi-year contract starting mid-2025.
The Queensland Rugby Union is thrilled to reveal today that the loosehead prop will be with the team from July 2025 through to the end of 2027.
At 29, Ross has established himself as a formidable presence in the front row at the Chiefs since 2017 and is looking forward to a successful Super Rugby Pacific season with the franchise in 2025.
The 118kg former All Black has consistently been part of the top Chiefs squads, appearing in the Super Rugby Pacific finals in 2023 and 2024, as well as the 2021 Super Rugby Aotearoa championship match.
Due to his birth in Gosford, just north of Sydney, Ross qualifies to play for Australia starting in July. He lived in Australia for the first eight years of his life before moving to Tauranga with his New Zealand parents.
His young family is just one of the motivations for him to seek out new opportunities that rugby can provide.
“I’ve been with the Chiefs from the very beginning. I aim for the team to have a phenomenal season in 2025, finishing on a high note since I owe a great deal to the franchise, the coaches, and my teammates for shaping me into the player I am today,” Ross stated.
“Additionally, it’s a good time for me to pursue something different overseas.
“The draw of Australia lies in the fact that I can go there and not be considered a foreign player. It’s also attractive to be closer to family as my partner and I now have our own young (17-month-old) child, Albie.”
Ross reached a personal milestone by representing the All Blacks against Ireland in 2022.
His aspirations remain high. He scored a try in Bay of Plenty’s recent match against Wellington in the fiercely contested Bunnings NPC final in Wellington.
“I’ve had enough of coming in second, so one goal is crystal clear,” Ross expressed.
He made a brief two-day visit to Brisbane during the off-season to evaluate the setup at what would soon be his prospective new home. He has opted for Queensland.
“The Reds offer outstanding facilities at Ballymore, and I have long respected the club’s character from both our great victories and significant defeats on the pitch,” Ross commented.
“After discussions with their coaching staff (head coach Les Kiss and assistant Zane Hilton), I realized how appealing it would be to be coached by them.
“As I mentioned, that’s a matter for the future. For now, I’m fully committed to the Chiefs for the upcoming season.”
