COLUMBIA, Mo. (AP) — Tamar Bates scored 29 points along with five steals, assisting Missouri in claiming a victory over No. 1 Kansas, 76-67, on Sunday afternoon at Mizzou Arena in Columbia, Missouri.

Mark Mitchell contributed 17 points in Missouri’s initial triumph over Kansas since a 74-71 win on February 4, 2012. Anthony Robinson II added 11 points and five steals for the Tigers (8-1), while Josh Gray secured a team-high 10 rebounds.

Hunter Dickinson recorded 19 points and 14 rebounds, and the Jayhawks (7-2) have now suffered two consecutive defeats on the road after a 76-63 loss to Creighton on Wednesday night.

“It’s astounding that we were still competitive given how poorly we played, but we managed to stay in it during the second half and narrowed it down to two,” said head coach Bill Self. “I think it was likely a mix of them being strong and us not being at our best. We have capable players to win at a high level, but we need to function as a team.”

Missouri established a lead of 57-33 following a jump shot from Tony Perkins with 14:15 left. However, the Jayhawks rallied to outscore the Tigers 30-8 over the next 11:55.

Bates netted 18 points to propel Missouri to a 39-25 advantage at halftime. The Tigers then commenced the second half with a 16-6 run.
