SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – Shippensburg University senior Mason Boyd was named the inaugural Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Men’s Indoor Field Co-Athlete of the Week on Monday afternoon by the league office.

Boyd, a reigning All-American and the all-time PSAC record holder in the indoor heptathlon, completed a heptathlon this weekend with a score of 5,005 points to finish second at the Bison Opener behind Carnegie Mellon freshman Luke Freimanis (5,092 points). His NCAA provisional qualifier ranks seventh in the nation after the opening weekend.

On Saturday, Boyd ran the 60-meter hurdles in 8.85 seconds, cleared the pole vault at 13 feet, 3 ½ inches and ran 2:49 in the 1,000 on Saturday. On Friday, Boyd ran the fastest 60-meter dash of the competition, opening the season with a time of 7.01 seconds. Overall, he finished 214 points off his personal best set last year at nationals.

Boyd shares the award with Slippery Rock’s Drew Layton, who cleared five meters (16 feet, 4 ¾ inches) in the pole vault to rank fourth on the national leaderboard after the opening weekend.

It is Boyd’s second career PSAC indoor weekly award; he was also recognized for his season-opening heptathlon last season.
