KANSAS CITY, Mo. – A special honor for a special student-athlete. The United Soccer Coaches (USC) announced its 2023 NCAA DI All-Americans on Friday afternoon, with Leo Burney of the University of Pennsylvania men’s soccer team earning the prestigious award.
For the second time in his collegiate career, Burney was named a Second Team All-American after a stellar senior year campaign for Penn. The defender also earned All-American status back in 2022.
During his time with the Red and Blue, Burney started in all 69 matches he appeared in, recording 27 points, including 11 goals. The defender earned Ivy League Defensive Player of the Year in 2022 and 2024 and First Team All-Ivy all four years of his career. Burney has led the Quakers to three straight Ivy League regular season titles and the #1 seed in the 2023 and 2024 Ivy League Men’s Soccer Tournaments.
The 2024 season was no exception for Burney, as he led a Quaker backend that allowed only 16 goals to hit the back of the net, an Ivy League low tally. The defender was also a force on the offensive end of the field, recording ten points, including four goals.
Burney signed a homegrown contract with the Seattle Sounders FC this past Wednesday.
