MADISON, Wis. (WMTV) – A Madison man was sentenced Thursday to 14 months in federal prison for using counterfeit money.

Alex Stubbs, 27, pleaded guilty to the charges in September.

His co-defendant Cornelius Stewart pleaded guilty Monday and is scheduled to be sentenced Feb. 27. Steward is accused of making the bills Stubbs would then use, according to the Department of Justice.

The two used counterfeit $100 bills three dozen times between July and November 2023, the DOJ said. They would use the bills when making small purchases, so they would receive a large amount of change in legitimate currency.

Agencies from Madison, Fitchburg, Sun Prairie, Marshall, Verona and more helped with the investigation.
