A trio of individual champions and other top placers led the Washington-Liberty Generals to a runner-up finish at the Bobcat Blizzard Invitational track-and-field meet.

The boys team scored 91.5 points in the meet at Battlefield High School on Dec. 14. Independence High School of Ashburn won with 109.

“Our boys had a strong meet, with a lot of contributors,” Washington-Liberty coach John Bacon said.

One of Washington-Liberty’s event winners was Carson Owen in the 55-meter dash in 6.7 seconds. He also placed fourth in the long jump.

Ian Crowley had a busy meet by winning the 55 hurdles (7.96), placing second in the long jump and third in the high jump.

Just weeks earlier, Crowley was playing for the Liberty District champion W-L football team in the title game of the 6D North Region tournament. Crowley was a starting defensive end and tight end for the Generals and a big part of the team’s success, being chosen to all-district and all-region teams.

“I was nice to have Ian with us,” Bacon said.

Benjamin Tahu won the high jump at 5-feet, 10-inches for Washington-Liberty.

Also for the W-L boys, Nico Docena was second in the hurdles and third in the triple jump. Fifth-place finishers were Nick West in the 500 and Thomas Lee in the triple jump.

Henry Brys was sixth in the 1,000 and 1,600 races, Trevor Parker was seventh in the 300, and eighth were Brandon Kaplan in the shot put and Morgan Fritz in the 3,200. Brys and Fritz were top cross-country runners from the fall season.

The 4×400 relay was second and the 4×200 fifth.

The Yorktown Patriots finished eighth in the boys meet.

Westson Marshall won the 300 (36.85) for Yorktown. Turner Holloway was third in the high jump and seventh in the 55 hurdles, Dylan Grorud was fifth in the 500, Ryan Schmitt seventh in the 1,600, Griffin Divis eighth in the 1,000 and the 4×200. The 4×800 relay team was fifth.
