Derek Brooks has been dismissed from his position as Wyoming East head boys basketball coach by the Wyoming County Board of Education.

The action came down at the Board’s meeting Wednesday night.

The reason for Brooks’ dismissal has not been made public. Wyoming County Superintendent John Henry did not respond to a request for comment.

Brooks, who declined comment, was to start his ninth season as head coach of the Warriors but had been on administrative leave prior to his dismissal. He had a career record of 97-89 (.522) since taking over for the 2016-2017 season.

His teams went to the state tournament in 2017 and 2022 as the sixth seed both times. They lost in the quarterfinals each year, to Chapmanville (65-42) in 2017 and Bluefield (65-44) in 2022.

The job has been posted on the Wyoming County Board of Education website with an application deadline of 4 p.m. on Jan. 2.

The Warriors (1-0) are scheduled to play Woodrow Wilson on the first day of the Little General Battle for the Armory on Friday, Dec. 27.
