BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lehigh women’s basketball rolled to a 69-64 victory over Wofford Saturday afternoon at Stabler Arena in its first game back in 13 days. The Mountain Hawks improved to 8-3 and the Terriers dropped to 6-4.
“Wofford is a good team,” said head coach Addie Micir. “It was awesome to get that kind of quality opponent on our home floor. We knew they were going to make a run, and we said we have to defensive rebound and keep scoring. And how about Maddie Albrecht, showing us what fifth-years need to do.”
Lehigh hit the game’s opening points after fifth-year senior Maddie Albrecht netted a three-pointer and the Mountain Hawks would hold the lead for the remainder of the game. Albrecht had a fantastic game on Saturday, recording a season-tying 21 points. She also grabbed six rebounds.
“When you listen to the cheers, they cheer so loud for Maddie and that says a lot about who she is as a person,” Micir said. “She wanted to come back, she wanted to be challenged and she wanted to win.”
Albrecht also helped secure the win for Lehigh down the stretch. Wofford cut Lehigh’s lead to 63-62 with 1:59 remaining, and Albrecht scored four straight points for Lehigh, netting a layup and two free throws.
Albrecht was one of three players for Lehigh to finish in double figures. Junior forward Lily Fandre and senior guard Ella Stemmer finished with 15 points apiece. Sophomore forward Whitney Lind was one point away from finishing in double figures, tallying nine points.
Lehigh came out red hot on Saturday, starting the game on an 11-3 run, forcing a Wofford timeout. Lehigh led 21-14 at the end of the first quarter behind a quarter-high four three-pointers. Stemmer hit two of her three three-pointers in a minute for the Mountain Hawks.
The second quarter was close, with Lehigh holding a 15-14 advantage. The Mountain Hawks led 36-28 after the first 20 minutes.
Fandre hit a three-pointer to open up the second-half scoring. Fandre’s lead put Lehigh up by 11and that would be the largest lead of the night for the Mountain Hawks. Wofford’s defense cut Lehigh’s lead to single digits and the Mountain Hawks would lead 59-49 at the end of the third frame.
While Wofford cut Lehigh’s lead to one point in the fourth quarter, the Mountain Hawks held strong down the final stretch.
Lehigh shot 20-of-50 from the field (40.0%) and 10-of-29 (345%) from long range. Wofford shot 26-of-64 (40.6%) and 7-of-32 (21.9%) from deep. The Terriers had 14 more shots than Lehigh on Saturday after corralling 16 offensive rebounds to Lehigh’s nine offensive rebounds.
First-year guard Keshia Vitalicio played a career-high 18 minutes. She also netted a career-high six points. Sophomore guard Gracyn Lovete finished with a game-high five assists. She also totaled three steals and had the game-sealing block.
Hellen Matthews finished with 17 points to lead the way for the Terriers on Saturday.
Next up, Lehigh will take on Misericordia on Dec. 29 at 1 p.m. in the non-league finale.
