CANYON, Texas (KFDA) – Playing two sports is hard, but Randall Senior Layla Romero makes it look easy.

“She is an athlete,“ said Randall girls basketball coach, Brooke Walthall.

Walthall isn’t the only one that know how competitive Romero is.

“I consider her a gamer,“ said Randall volleyball coach, Karli Morrison. ”Like when the lights come on and it’s time for game time, she’s ready to play.”

Romero was a part of a powerhouse in Randall volleyball with three consecutive state championship appearances in one state title.

“She really single handedly won some games for us, Layla did,” said Morrison.

She’s now taking the court for one last season as a high school basketball player.

“Layla’s made a big impact in our basketball program for us,” said Walthall. “She made a big shot last year to help us get a big district win.”

Romero came to Randall as a freshman, and Walthall embraced her wholeheartedly.

“I remember the specific day that she got here and how excited we were for her,” said Walthall. “She’s been such a fun kid.”

Now, Romero is the only senior in the school to play both volleyball and basketball this year. As for why she does it, it’s simple.

“I love both sports,” said Romero.

Putting on the black and silver jersey means a lot to her.

“It’s an honor because we’re a really good school,” Romero said. “We’ve won the Lone Star Cup two years in a row. We are very successful in every sport.”

Even when their sport isn’t in season, her coaches are there cheering her on.

“We want them to play other sports and we want to be involved…Layla’s proof of that, that she can do it all four years,” said Morrison.

“As you watch these kiddos grow and you get to know them in junior high and in high school, and you build a real relationship with them,” said Walthall. You want them to be so successful.“

For Romero, her journey means everything.

“You don’t really think about it till after the fact,” Romero said. “Senior night didn’t hit me until after and I cried after. Other than that, enjoy like the moments while you can.”

Romero and the Lady Raiders’ basketball team is back in action Jan. 7 on the road to Pampa.
