NEW YORK – A strong showing by the Fordham University women’s basketball team saw the Rams battle one of the nation’s top teams for much of the way, but were outlasted 69-53 at No. 24 Cal Saturday to open the Raising the B.A.R. (basketball, activism, representation) Invitational.

The loss snaps a four-game win streak for the Rams who fall to 6-4 on the year, while the No. 24 Bears improved to 12-1 on the campaign. Both sides will play their respective second and final games of the Raising the B.A.R.

Taylor Donaldson tallied 24 points to lead the Fordham offense on the night along with three steals, tied with Emma Wilson-Saltos for the team high in that category. Wilson-Saltos also added eight rebounds, one behind Irene Murua, who pulled down nine. Murua recorded seven points Saturday, as did Taya Davis who added eight points for the Rams along with seven from Chae Harris.

The Bears opened the game on a 13-2 run, before Fordham gathered its footing late in the first quarter, trailing 22-10 after one quarter.

Nabbing a pair of steals in the first minute of the second quarter, the Rams tallied a pair of free throws ahead of a Donaldson three-pointer to cut the deficit to single digits. Fordham made it just a five point game with just over five minutes to go in the first half, using a 7-2 run to pull back within reach before the break.

Another Donaldson trey brought the Maroon and White back within one possession at 26-23, before Cal managed to pull away just before the break, closing the half with seven of the last nine points, but Fordham would still trail by just eight points midway through against the No. 24 team in the nation.

Out of the break, Fordham continued to keep pace with the Bears, using a Harris three to cut the lead back to single digits with 4:22 to play in the third, and trailed by just 10 going into the final ten minutes of action.

Cal would break away in the fourth to push the lead further, ahead of a late 7-0 Fordham run to make it just an 11-point game with three minutes to go, but the No. 24 Bears held on for a 69-53 win Saturday.

The Rams will take on either Xavier or Temple in the consolation game of the Raising the B.A.R. Invitational tomorrow afternoon at 6:00 p.m. EST (3:00 p.m. local).
