These three early-season incidents put the risks associated with chair lifts on display. While chair lifts are generally safe and serious incidents are uncommon – our team at OutThere Colorado typically covers about one big fall a year – if riding lifts is not treated with caution and care, consequences can be nasty.According to local news source Summit Daily, two snowboarders were injured in separate incidents that involved a 37-foot falls to the ground from the Beaver Run Chair on Breckenridge Resort’s Peak 9. While both falls took place at roughly the same point on the lift, the 31-year-old boarder took his fall on December 13, followed by a 21-year-old taking a fall on December 16. The first boarder fell while his safety bar was raised, though information about the safety bar in the second fall was not released. While many resorts in Colorado don’t have rigid rules around putting the safety bar down – generally with the exception of resort employees – doing so is important for general safety and strongly encouraged. You might not lose your season pass for not doing so, but doing so might end up saving your life.Read a full report about the most recent falls at Breckenridge Resort here. Two more snowboarders have fallen from Colorado lifts in recent days, adding to another fall that took place at Keystone Resort earlier this month. These two falls add to another fall that took place in Summit County just days before, on December 11. In that fall, a male snowboarder plunged 47 feet off of a lift at Keystone Resort and was airlifted from the scene. Reporting about that incident indicates that the 32-year-old male was adjusting his bindings with the safety bar raised at the time of that fall.
