Maui Fire rescue crews are warning people that ocean conditions could remain dangerous in Maui’s waters going into the new year after a High Surf Warning kept Maui’s Ocean Safety officers busy over the weekend.
Ocean Safety officials are advising the public that, if someone is swept into the ocean or in distress in the water, they should call 911, and should not enter the water on their own under these conditions.
On Sunday, a North Shore-based jet ski crew responded to a 911 call, though the person had made it to shore by the time Ocean Safety Officers arrived. The D T Fleming-based jet ski crew also responded to three 911 calls and rescued eight individuals.

The extra-large north swell caused water to surge and sweep across portions of Baldwin and Ho’okipa. Over the weekend, one of the Ho’okipa pavilions was damaged by the weather, and Baldwin’s parking lot was flooded, according to officials.
The Maui County Department of Parks and Recreation reopened Ho‘okipa Beach Park on Tuesday after addressing debris and damage from high surf. Baldwin Beach Park and Tavares Bay in Kūʻau remain closed.
The National Weather Service in Honolulu also downgraded the High Surf Warning to a High Surf Advisory for north-facing shores of Maui on Tuesday.

Ocean Safety jet ski crews from Baldwin Beach Park, Ho’okipa Beach Park and D T Fleming Beach Park remained on-duty until sunset, and Baldwin Beach Park and Ho’okipa Beach Park on the North Shore were closed due to large surf.
