Congratulations to Springs Valley’s Maddie Carnes on being voted IndyStar Preseason Player of the Year! Carnes, who received 20,092 votes, Carnes contributes as both a setter and a hitter, bringing 1,879 assists and 843 kills (.347 hit%) entering her senior season. The Bellmont commit accounted for 221 kills (.405 hit%) and a career-best 669 assists in 2024, rounding out her line with 65 aces (185 career), 23 blocks and 271 digs (908 career).

Here are this week’s top performers.
Sierra Bramel, Hamilton Heights
The senior setter cleared 1,000 career assists for the Huskies, who are 7-2 to start the season, with losses to 4A’s Carmel and Mt. Vernon.
Emery Cardinal, Guerin Catholic
The senior middle blocker recorded 50 kills on .414 hitting, eight blocks and two digs for the Golden Eagles, who are off to a 5-0 start with a four-set win over New Palestine and a 3-0 run through the Covenant Christian Invite over the weekend.
Marlee Chafin, Southport
Chafin, a setter, did a bit of everything for the Cardinals on the attack, recording 56 assists with only one ball-handling error on 203 attempts and 65 kills on .340 hitting (156 attempts). She rounded out her line with 17 aces, four total blocks and 81 digs.
Mya Comer, Greensburg
Comer cleared 30 assists in two of her first three matches this season, posting 33 in a four-set win over East Central and 39 in a four-set win over Triton Central. She has 99 assists, 16 kills, seven aces and 42 digs through 11 sets.
Aubry Dowling, Mt. Vernon
Dowling, a senior, has racked up 105 digs through her first 23 sets for the fast-rising Marauders, already nearly a third of the way to the career-high (362) she set last season. She also registered 16 assists, five assists and her fifth career kill. More on Mt. Vernon in this week’s Central Indiana Fab 15.
Sophia Gisslen, FW Carroll
The senior setter has 133 assists this season. 78 of those helpers came at the Tom Heck Penn Tournament over the weekend, where she also posted six aces and six blocks. Gisslen has nine kills through 14 sets. Carroll has yet to lose a set this season.
Hadley Hasselbring, Providence
The sophomore hitter is well on her way to a career season, racking up 104 kills (.254 hit%) through her first 27 sets. Hasselbring had 162 kills on .143 hitting last season. She’s also picked up 15 aces, six blocks, 54 digs and five assists to start the year.
Chase Lemming, Seeger
Lemming is averaging 5.6 kills through her first 18 sets (100 total) and hitting .491. Not bad. She’s also tallied nine aces, a block and 71 digs. Lemming had 35 kills in a five-set win over Tri-County and 27 in a three-set sweep of Covington.

Rose Mahin, Franklin
The Franklin senior is picking up where she left off last season, logging 93 kills on .284 hitting through her first 17 sets. She’s also served seven aces, totaled 10 blocks, dug out 19 shots and assisted on four kills. Mahin has 1,128 career kills.
Macie Saalfrank, Norwell
Saalfrank was a bright spot in a five-set loss to Heritage, totaling 26 kills, 18 digs, two assists and two aces with a 93.3% serve%. The senior has 34 kills, six aces, a block and 30 digs for the season.
Natalie Sevier, New Palestine
The senior attacker is off to a torrid start with 74 kills, nine aces, 39 digs and three assists. She’s cleared double-digit kills in each of her first three matches, including 30 on .556 hitting in a four-set loss to Guerin Catholic.
Anabelle Schembra, Center Grove
Schembra cleared 109 assists, 12 kills, seven aces, seven blocks and 44 digs through her first 13 sets, then reached a career milestone with her 2,000th career assist over the weekend vs. New Castle. Schembra recently announced her commitment to UCF.
Emily Uhlmann, NorthWood
The senior setter pushed past 1,300 career assists with 192 through 22 sets to start the season. Uhlmann also recorded 44 kills on .493 hitting, 13 aces, nine total blocks and 44 digs.
Audrey Utterback, Plainfield
Utterback kicked off her sophomore season with 112 kills on .368 hitting, 45 digs, eight blocks and six aces. Her efforts have the Quakers off to a 5-1 start, with the lone loss coming against Fishers in the championship match of Saturday’s Plainfield Invite.
Ella Warrick, Linton-Stockton
The senior outside hitter racked up 65 kills on .464 hitting through her first 10 sets. Warrick, who’s nearing 1,200 career kills, also put down 17 aces, three blocks, 30 digs and three assists for the 3-1 Miners.
Emily Williams, Franklin Central
It was a record-setting week for the junior, who averaged 11.3 assists per set through her first six matches (203 total). She led the Flashes to a five-set win over Perry Meridian, wherein they hit .225 — a school-record for hitting percentage. Williams had 54 assists, 18 digs, six kills and four aces individually. She broke the school record for aces in a two-set match at the Flashes Invite over the weekend.
Amaya Zander, Lawrence North
Zander helped Lawrence North go the distance against defending Class A champion Trinity Lutheran, racking up 20 kills. She then went for 14 terminations against Roncalli and 27 vs. Lawrence Central.
