The Belizean men’s national volleyball team is ‘stuck’ in Guatemala after encountering a road blockade during their return trip from El Salvador. The team had just competed in the Centroamericano de Voleibol Mayor Masculino Final Four in San Salvador and set out for Belize shortly after midnight.
Team member Bryton Codd told News 5, “So we left San Salvador, El Salvador this morning at about midnight. We’ve been traveling for about seven hours already. We were stuck in some part of Guatemala right before the cut-off to go towards Belize. But we cannot pass.”
According to Codd, the team was caught in what appears to be a teachers’ protest that has completely blocked the road. “We don’t know how long this protest is gonna last, but it is a protest. The road is blocked. We can’t move. We’re stuck, we’re exhausted, we’re tired. We don’t know when this is gonna end,” he said.

Reports from locals suggested the demonstration could end by mid-afternoon, but the team remains uncertain. “We’re just hoping that it remains peaceful and it doesn’t erupt into any type of civil unrest,” Codd added.
The team says they are safe and remain hopeful they will be able to continue their journey soon. “It seems like it’s a peaceful protest, but the roads are completely blocked. Our bus is parked all the way down there and we’re just stuck,” Codd said.

US women’s national volleyball team falls short to China, but qualifies for VNL final round – The Daily Texan

In a nail-biter of a match, the U.S. women’s national volleyball team dropped set five and came up just short against China on Sunday night in Volleyball Nations League play.
The Team USA squad, including four former Longhorns, lost three consecutive sets to China in Arlington, Texas, after claiming 25-18 and 25-19 victories in the first two.
However, despite leaving this weekend with a blemish on their 3-1 record, the U.S. women’s performances throughout this tournament have helped them qualify for the final round of the VNL, a single-elimination tournament that consists of the top eight teams in the preliminary phase.
“We’ve been challenged in every match in this VNL tournament, and we will continue to be challenged every match this summer, so we are working our hardest to try to be steady and consistent and play some good volleyball,” setter Jordyn Poulter said following their tight win against Canada on Saturday.
Former Longhorns middle blocker Brionne Butler, middle blocker Asjia O’Neal, outside hitter Logan Eggleston and outside hitter Madisen Skinner all embraced these challenges this week with Team USA. While Skinner and Eggleston played a larger role in the team’s win against Canada, O’Neal and Butler saw the court most against China.
O’Neal finished the match with seven attack points and two block points, while Butler accumulated five attack points and two block points.
“It’s always fun to play at home, and we barely ever get the chance,” Butler said after the Canada matchup. “But I saw a lot of burnt orange in the crowd, so I was really excited that we got to play in front of them.”
Team USA won’t have much time to celebrate their winning record this week or to sulk in how it concluded, because the VNL final round is set to start on July 23.
USA head coach Erik Sullivan said this team still looks to tighten up a few aspects of their game.
“We still have some letdowns that kind of get away from us, so I’d like to clean those up and address those,” Sullivan said after their third game of the weekend. “I feel like we are getting up three or four points in a set and then giving those points back in maybe not the greatest fashion.”
Sullivan also has close ties to Texas, serving as associate head coach for the Longhorns for 14 seasons and helping the program to three titles during his tenure.
He will be at the helm for this team during their finals journey, which will start in under three weeks from now.

Graduate students in The University of Southern Mississippi’s (USM) Sport Management
program gained real-world experience last spring through a hands-on collaboration
with the Mississippi Mud Monsters, a newly established professional independent minor
league baseball team based in Pearl, Miss.
As part of the SM 642 Sport Venue and Event Management course, students worked directly
with the Mud Monsters front office to develop a game-day operations plan for a late-summer
home game. The partnership gave students a unique opportunity to apply classroom concepts
to an actual sporting event, closely reflecting the challenges and expectations of
working in the sports industry.
The Mud Monsters, members of the Frontier League—a professional league with more than
30 years of history—were established in fall 2024 following the departure of the Mississippi
Braves. Since their formation, the organization has built its identity from the ground
up, including branding, ticketing, marketing, merchandising and fan engagement. The
team made its debut at Trustmark Park in May.
Working under the guidance of Dr. Chris Croft, associate professor of sport management,
students collaborated with Mississippi Mud Monsters General Manager Andrew Seymour
to develop comprehensive proposals that included game-day previews, event operations,
marketing and promotional strategies, and social media campaigns. Students were provided
with real sponsor guidelines and audience demographics to align their ideas with the
team’s objectives.
“We are very grateful for the partnership with the Southern Miss Sport Management
program,” said Seymour. “It was a great opportunity for us to share the Mud Monsters’
vision and brand with the students. We are currently reviewing their project materials
and looking to incorporate several ideas into our late-season event.”
Seymour also served as a featured panelist during the program’s Sport Management Symposium
last March. He returned later that day for the event’s career fair, accompanied by
team staff members Keith Wilson, operations manager, and Macy Worstell, marketing
and retail manager. The visit gave students direct access to sports industry professionals
and networking opportunities.
“This was an outstanding opportunity for our graduate students to engage with a new
professional sports organization and contribute to an actual event,” said Croft. “We
deeply appreciate Andrew Seymour and his team for their time and mentorship. I know
many of our students are now Mud Monsters fans and are excited to attend games this
summer.”
The Sport Management program at Southern Miss is nationally and internationally recognized
for its commitment to applied learning and industry engagement. Faculty have experience
working with major organizations such as the NFL, NBA, MLB, NCAA and PGA. The program’s
strong professional network and focus on real-world application ensure graduates are
prepared to thrive in competitive careers across sports, events and entertainment.

American Quincy Wilson broke the U18 world record in the 400m for a fourth time, clocking 44.10 seconds to win at the Murphey Classic in Memphis, Tennessee, on Saturday.
Last summer, Wilson won 4x400m relay gold at age 16 to become the youngest male Olympic track and field medalist in history. He turned 17 on Jan. 8.
On Saturday, Wilson lowered his personal best by one tenth of a second. Race video is here.
“I went out there and shot out like a bullet,” he said.
On the all-time world U18 list, he is now 74 hundredths faster than the second-fastest junior 400m sprinter in history, fellow American Justin Robinson.
Wilson also ranks second on the all-time U20 400m list behind American Steve Lewis, who won the 1988 Olympic title in 43.87 seconds at age 19.
For this year, Wilson is the joint-fourth-fastest man in the world across all ages and third among Americans behind Khaleb McRae (43.91) and Jacory Patterson (43.98).
The top three men in the USA Track and Field Outdoor Championships 400m final on Aug. 2 are in line to make the team individually for the World Championships in Tokyo in September. Several more are expected to make the team for the 4x400m relay pool.
The field at USATF Outdoors in Eugene, Oregon, could also include 2024 Olympic gold medalist Quincy Hall, 2025 World Indoor champion Chris Bailey and 2022 World outdoor champion Michael Norman.
Wilson, already the youngest American male Olympic track and field athlete in history, can become the youngest American man to compete at a World Outdoor Track and Field Championships, according to Bill Mallon of the OlyMADMen.
Melissa Jefferson-Wooden ran personal bests in the 100m and the 200m at Grand Slam Track Philadelphia.
