The family’s biggest need right now is a vehicle equipped to lift and transport Ken — especially to his specialized therapy treatment here in Mobile. Click here to donate to a gofundme to the help the family with expenses has been set up. A lot of people have been following Ken’s recovery journey — including David and Liz Knowles — who did not know the family before this. Liz put out a red ribbon at her home and the school back in November — and when she found out last week the family was returning home Friday — she wanted to do something more. Encouraged to post it on social media — Liz put a callout for the community to paint the town red — and let’s just say love took over. Discharged on Friday — they returned home to more than 300 red ribbons around town. Currently staying in a hotel as last minute renovations are underway at home to accommodate Ken — the family can’t thank the community enough for the continued support — as Ken continues to make tremendous progress. When the injury happened on September 27h — Ken was initially recovering in Mobile — but later airlifted in mid-October to a rehab facility in Atlanta, where he spent the holidays. His mom Dr. Tonya Lett adding updates to social media. “It spread like wildfire — it was amazing watching people reach out to us and people to come in our store and pick up stuff — that have never stepped foot in our store. I mean even people they would come in and say I don’t want the bow — I just want to donate money to this family,” said Herrington. “There were even people getting red bows from surrounding areas like Evergreen to show support.” With a callout on social media — Herrington’s florist jumped onboard and got busy making red bows. At a piece — half of the proceeds were given to the family. “With every red ribbon that we saw our smile got bigger and bigger and bigger. So you can imagine after seeing so many — how big we were smiling. It just did our hearts well — just seeing that,” said Dr. Lett. “He’s moving his right arm — that right side is definitely more dominant right now than the left but he’s still doing very well. He has movement in his toes, which is very low below the injury level — so we are just very excited,” said Tonya. “A wild experience. I had friends coming up to me — thanking me. They said they have been praying for me and supporting me, their parents supporting me — taking pictures with me — made me feel welcoming,” said Ken. “It felt amazing — I was at home again,” said Ken. “It’s amazing what a small town can do and I’m so thankful you know — that I live in Brewton, Alabama,” said Hillary Herrington, Herrington’s The Florist. Knowing each bow represents a prayer — Ken felt the love. “Often times when I was taking his pictures for our facebook posts — he’d say momma that’s enough… that’s enough — I don’t want to smile anymore — that’s enough. But I did not have any problems getting him to smile yesterday at the football banquet — he was overjoyed — they were overjoyed to see him. It was a wonderful time,” said Tonya. Copyright 2025 WALA.
