The event, which drew over 100 athletes, was a milestone for some Estevan skaters, including one making her competition debut.
“It was a great turnout,” said Ashley Piper, head coach of the Estevan Skating Club. “For one of our skaters, it was her first competition ever, so it was a really positive experience for everyone.”
Piper added that watching skaters improve throughout the season has been rewarding. “Some are at their third competition this year and showing steady growth,” she said.
Rachel Duncan led the medal haul with gold in her long program and silver in her short program. McKenna Bohn claimed silver in the short program, while Braxton Pouteaux earned silver in the long program. Meeka Gedak secured bronze in the elements event, which involves performing four isolated skating skills.
“Some athletes landed jumps they hadn’t completed in a while, and a few achieved personal best scores,” said Piper. “These competitions are great for showcasing progress and building confidence under pressure.”
Preparing for competitions takes years of dedication. Many Estevan skaters have been part of the figure skating program for two or three years, often building foundational skills in the CanSkate program first.
The Estevan Skating Club will continue its season next weekend in Moose Jaw, with athletes competing at the Star 1 to 4 levels.
Eight skaters from the Estevan Skating Club showcased their skills at the Dalmeny Regional Skating Competition over the weekend, bringing home five medals.
